Best Dictation App in 2026: Picks for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows

The best dictation app for most people is the one already on the device, for short text: Apple Dictation on iPhone and Mac, Gboard voice typing on Android, and Windows voice typing (Windows key + H) on a PC. For dictation that cleans up your words in every app, Wispr Flow or Superwhisper is the paid step up. For long voice notes that should come back as a summary and a to-do list, use a voice notes app such as ParrotNotes.

Three dictation jobs, and why one app rarely does all three

Picture Marcus, a consultant, on level three of a parking garage at 5:10 PM. He has a client recap promised by six, so he taps the microphone on his keyboard and starts talking. Ninety seconds in, he stops to find a figure in his notebook, the microphone switches off, and the next four sentences go nowhere.

That's the keyboard mic doing exactly what it was built for: short text. "Dictation" is really three jobs, and the right app depends on which one you're doing.

Job 1: typing with your voice. Your cursor is in a box (a message, an email, a form) and you want words in it. A voice keyboard does this.

Job 2: drafting a long document at a desk. A report, a memo, a chapter. You want to talk for 20 minutes and edit by voice.

Job 3: talking a note that has to become something. A debrief after a client visit, or ideas on the walk to the train. You're thinking out loud, and you need the result organized: what happened, what was decided, who does what.

Speaking is fast. In a smartphone study by researchers from Stanford, the University of Washington, and Baidu, speech input was 2.93 times faster than the keyboard in English: 153 words a minute against 52. Speech left slightly more errors in the final text (1.30% against 0.79%). So talking is never the slow part. Fixing and finishing the text is.

Best free dictation app on each device

Apple Dictation: best free dictation app for iPhone and Mac

On iPhone, tap the microphone on the keyboard. Apple's Dictation guide for iPhone says you can dictate anywhere you can type, and the keyboard stays open so you can switch between voice and touch. In many languages it runs on the iPhone itself, and in supported languages it adds commas, periods and question marks for you.

One detail explains Marcus's evening: Apple's guides say Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech.

On a Mac, turn it on in System Settings, then Keyboard, then Dictation. Apple's Mac Dictation guide (macOS 27, checked November 7, 2026) says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout, apart from that 30-second silence stop. On Macs with an M3 chip or later and at least 12GB of memory, an on-device Apple Intelligence model improves spelling, punctuation and capitalization in English. Cost: free. Best for: messages, short emails, search boxes, and quick paragraphs on a Mac.

Gboard voice typing: best free dictation app for Android

On Android, Gboard's voice typing starts from the microphone at the top of the keyboard. You can say punctuation such as "period," "comma," "question mark" and "new paragraph," though not in every language.

Pixel owners get more. Google's page on advanced voice typing (checked November 7, 2026) covers Pixel 6 and later in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. It adds commands like "Clear" and "Send," and Pixel 8 or later can take detailed edits such as "Change ___ to ___." Cost: free. Best for: Android users who dictate messages and short replies.

Windows voice typing: best free dictation on a PC

Press the Windows key and H. Microsoft's voice typing page covers Windows 11 and Windows 10 and says you need an internet connection (it uses Azure speech services), a working microphone and your cursor in a text box. Cost: free. Best for: dictating into whatever program is open on a work laptop.

Best AI dictation apps for typing into any app

These two are what most people mean by an AI dictation app: they type where your cursor is, on every device, and reshape what you said rather than only transcribing it.

Wispr Flow: best cross-platform voice keyboard

Wispr Flow runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Its pitch is cleanup: Flow "automatically removes filler words, adds punctuation, and formats your writing." It learns your names and jargon in a personal dictionary, expands spoken shortcuts into saved snippets, and lists 100+ languages.

What it costs (wisprflow.ai/pricing, checked November 7, 2026): Free is described only as "Limited words per week"; Wispr no longer prints a number on the page (earlier in 2026 it said 2,000 words a week on desktop). Pro is $15 per user a month, or $12 a month billed annually. A Growth plan is $23 a month, or $18 billed annually.

Superwhisper: best for dictating offline

Superwhisper runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and its headline feature is local models that work with no connection. The Free plan includes voice to text in any app, 100+ languages, unlimited use of its Whisper models and custom prompts.

Pro adds cloud and local AI models, your own AI API keys, file transcription and translation into English. Superwhisper says you can try Pro features for 3,000 words.

Best for: people who like to tinker with models and prompts, and anyone who wants dictation with no connection.

Best dictation software for long documents at a desk

Picture Owen, a lawyer drafting a 3,000-word advice memo on a Sunday afternoon. He wants to say "new paragraph" and "select that" without touching the mouse. That's Job 2.

Google Docs voice typing: best free option for long drafts

In Google Docs, open Tools, then Voice typing. Google's help page says it works in the latest Chrome, Edge and Safari. Voice commands for editing and formatting are English only, and both your account and the document must be set to English. Our guide to voice typing in Google Docs has every command.

If you pay for Microsoft 365, Word's Dictate button does the same job, and OneNote dictation works for notebooks.

Cost: free with a Google account. Best for: first drafts of reports and memos.

Dragon: best for specialist vocabulary on Windows

Dragon Professional v16 is "optimized for Windows 11 and backwards-compatible to Windows 10." It supports custom voice commands that insert boilerplate text, and macros that run multi-step workflows by voice.

Cost: the page showed no price and no online checkout on November 7, 2026; it points to a licensing contact form and a sales phone line. Which Dragon editions are still sold is in our Dragon dictation review.

Best for: legal, technical and other specialist writers on Windows who'll invest time in custom vocabulary. If what you dictate is confidential, read the vendor's privacy terms first.

Best dictation app for long voice notes: ParrotNotes

ParrotNotes is not a voice keyboard. It won't type into your email app or a form, and if that's your job, the apps above are the better pick. It's built for Job 3: you open it on your phone, tap record and talk, for as long as the thought takes. There's no text box to aim at and no silence timer that ends the session, and recording carries on with the screen locked, so the phone can sit in your pocket while you walk.

When you stop, the work that follows dictation is already done. You get the full transcript, an AI summary and your action items as a list, and ParrotNotes can draft a follow-up email from what you said. The 60-second dictation test

Reviews can't tell you how an app handles your accent or your clients' names. This test can. It's built from the things that break dictation: surnames, money, dates, an address, a question and a list.

Read this aloud at your normal pace, in the place you usually dictate. Swap in two names from your own client list.

Note for Thursday, October 8. I met Priya Raghunathan and Sean O'Dwyer at 9:45 AM at 1420 West Harbour Street. They approved phase two at $18,500, which is 12% under the first quote. Open question: can we move the kickoff from the 14th to the 21st? Sean's team needs the draft scope by Friday. New paragraph. Action items. One, send the revised scope to Priya by Friday noon. On your second attempt, pause for ten full seconds in the middle and see whether the app is still listening.

Score each line 0 (wrong), 1 (close) or 2 (right):

1. Names: Raghunathan, O'Dwyer, Jürgen and your two client names
2. Money and percentages: $18,500 and 12% written as figures
3. Dates, times and the address: October 8, 9:45 AM, the 14th, the 21st, 1420 West Harbour Street
4. Punctuation: the colon, the question mark and sentence breaks without you saying them
5. Structure: a paragraph break and a list of three, not one block
6. Stamina: still recording after your ten-second pause

That gives you a score out of 12. Now time the part that matters: how many minutes did it take to turn the result into something you could send? An app that scores 9 and needs one minute of fixing beats one that scores 11 and leaves you to write the email yourself. Run it on two or three free plans before you pay for anything.

How to dictate a note you can use

Whichever dictation app you choose, the shape of what you say decides how useful the note is. This five-line spoken script fixes most rambling.

1. Label it. "Debrief, Harbour Street project, Thursday afternoon." Future you will search for this.
2. Say what happened in three sentences. Who you met, what it was about, how it went.
3. State decisions and numbers slowly. "They approved eighteen thousand five hundred dollars." Spell any unusual surname once.
4. Say "action items," then give each one an owner, a verb and a date. "I send the scope by Friday noon. Sean confirms the room by Monday."
5. Finish with open questions, then "end of note." A clear ending keeps tomorrow's note separate from today's.
