Lena is a freelance UX consultant. She writes all day on an Apple Silicon MacBook: client emails, Figma comments, research notes and prompts for her coding agent. Half her week is spent on trains and in client offices with patchy Wi-Fi. A friend told her Superwhisper would let her talk instead of type, even offline. (Lena is a composite, not a real person.)
Keisha searched for the same app from her car. She sells commercial insurance to restaurants and contractors. Most of what she needs written down is said out loud, across a table, to a business owner. (Keisha is a composite too.)
One Superwhisper review can't give both of them the same answer. This one covers what Superwhisper does on each device, its own accuracy figures, what each plan costs over time, what Free includes (its own pages disagree), and a 10-question fit test.
Every fact below comes from Superwhisper's own pages, read on October 23, 2026, with links. We didn't run a hands-on test.
One disclosure: ParrotNotes publishes this blog, and ParrotNotes is our app. It appears near the end for readers like Keisha. If that's you, try ParrotNotes free and come back for the Superwhisper facts.
Superwhisper review in short
Superwhisper fits you if you write in many apps on a Mac or PC, want your voice to stay on your device when you choose, and like setting things up: models, modes, prompts and vocabulary. Pro costs $8.49 a month, and there's a lifetime license.
Look elsewhere if you want clean text with no setup, if you work mostly on a phone, or if what you need captured is a conversation with someone else rather than words typed into a box.
What is Superwhisper?
Superwhisper is an AI dictation app: "Just speak. Write faster." You hold a shortcut, talk, and the text is pasted where your cursor is.
On a Mac, the quickstart says holding Right Command is the default, and Option + Space starts and stops a recording. It needs macOS 14 or later, or Windows 10 or 11.
Two choices shape every dictation: the voice model that turns audio into text, and the mode that decides what happens to that text.
Voice models. The free ones are OpenAI's open-source Whisper models, run on your own computer. Pro adds Superwhisper's cloud model S1-Voice, local Cohere and Parakeet models, and cloud models from Deepgram and ElevenLabs (voice models page).
Modes. The built-in modes are:
- Voice to Text: transcription only, no AI processing, so it's fast
- Message: removes filler words, fixes grammar and punctuation, keeps your tone
- Mail: adds a greeting, paragraphs and a sign-off, with a Casual to Formal slider
- Note: structures your words as a note with key points and action items
- Super: adapts to the app you're in, using on-screen text, selected text and your clipboard
- Custom: your own AI instructions, with the language model you pick (the home page shows GPT-5, Claude Haiku 4.5, Llama 4, Grok 4.1 and Gemini 3.0 Flash)
Superwhisper hands you the controls, where Wispr Flow makes the choices for you. Our Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow comparison covers that head-to-head.
Superwhisper for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
One Pro license covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus your phones, but the apps aren't identical. From Superwhisper's docs, October 23, 2026:
| Mac | Windows | iPhone | Android | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How you dictate | Shortcut, in any app | Shortcut, in any app | Custom keyboard, switched with the globe key | Floating bubble over any app |
| Local (offline) models | Yes, best on Apple Silicon | Yes; a Vulkan GPU helps, otherwise CPU is "much slower" | Local models listed; cloud models need internet | Not stated |
| Meetings with summaries | Yes (Pro) | Meeting mode preset with system audio instead | Not listed | Not listed |
| Coding agent integrations and CLI | Yes | Not yet | Not listed | Not listed |
| Tablets | n/a | n/a | iPhone only, no iPad | Phones only, no tablets |
Sources: Windows, iOS, Android, Meetings, Plans. Linux is listed as "Coming soon."
On phones, modes and vocabulary are stored per device and don't sync from your computer yet. The iPhone keyboard needs Allow Full Access. For other phone options, see our guide to the dictation app for iPhone.
Superwhisper accuracy: what the company publishes
Superwhisper publishes a benchmark leaderboard (updated September 3, 2026). Its method page says it tests 16 speech models on 8 datasets, including meetings and accented speech, for word error rate (WER) and response time.
| Model on Superwhisper's leaderboard | Blended score | Word error rate |
|---|---|---|
| Superwhisper S1-Voice (cloud) | 84 | 6.6% |
| ElevenLabs Scribe v2 | 81 | 7.5% |
| OpenAI GPT Transcribe | 80 | 7.8% |
| Wispr Flow (raw output, cleanup off) | 75 | 8.7% |
| Deepgram Nova 3 | 75 | 10.1% |
The best local model, Cohere Transcribe, is listed at 8.4% WER on an Apple M4.
Two caveats:
- Superwhisper ran the test and ranks itself first. It deserves credit for publishing method and losses (it says ElevenLabs and OpenAI beat it on recall of custom vocabulary), but it isn't independent.
- The hardware is new. Local models were measured on M4 and M4 Max chips, and the docs warn: "don't assume these figures carry over to an older Mac."
Your own voice, client names and background noise aren't in any dataset. Independent research backs talking in general: in a Stanford, University of Washington and Baidu study, speech input was 2.93 times faster than the keyboard in English, with slightly more errors left (1.30% against 0.79%). Speaking is rarely the slow part. Fixing is.
Superwhisper pricing
The plans
These are the prices on superwhisper.com and its Plans docs, checked October 23, 2026, in US dollars.
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary, text replacements |
| Pro Monthly | $8.49 a month | Everything: cloud and extra local models, AI modes, file transcription, translation into English, Meetings on Mac |
| Pro Annual | $84.99 a year | Same features ("save ~17%") |
| Pro Lifetime | $249.99 once | Same features, paid once |
| Enterprise | Custom | SSO, centralized billing, model access control, enterprise-hosted models, SOC 2 Type II |
From the same pages:
- Try Pro for 3,000 words, including Meetings. Then the app falls back to Free; nothing is deleted.
- 40% off for verified students, educators and non-profits, on superwhisper.com only, and you have to ask before you buy.
- Buy on the website. App Store and Google Play purchases cost more.
- 30-day refund on every individual plan, from your first purchase (not on renewals).
Monthly, Annual or Lifetime? The break-even math
Every plan has the same features, so the question is how long you'll use it. Here's the cost over time at list prices.
| You use Superwhisper for | Monthly ($8.49) | Annual ($84.99) | Lifetime ($249.99) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year | $101.88 | $84.99 | $249.99 |
| 2 years | $203.76 | $169.98 | $249.99 |
| 3 years | $305.64 | $254.97 | $249.99 |
| 5 years | $509.40 | $424.95 | $249.99 |
- Lifetime against Monthly breaks even in month 30, so about two and a half years.
- Lifetime against Annual breaks even at the third annual payment: three of them ($254.97) cost slightly more than Lifetime.
- With the 40% discount, the prices work out to about $5.09 a month, $50.99 a year or $149.99 once, and the break-even months stay the same.
So Lifetime is a bet that you'll still use Superwhisper in three years. If you're not sure, Annual is the cheaper way to find out.
What the Free plan includes (Superwhisper's pages disagree)
Is Superwhisper free? Yes, but how much you get depends on which of its pages you read. On October 23, 2026, the home page and the Plans docs disagreed:
| Feature | Home page, Free card | Plans docs, Free column |
|---|---|---|
| Dictation in any app | Yes | Yes, unlimited with local Whisper models |
| Whisper models | "Unlimited use" | Yes |
| Custom prompts | "Custom prompt control" | Up to 2 modes, "no AI processing" |
| Meetings | "Meetings (Mac only)" | "Free words only" (the 3,000 trial words) |
| AI modes (Message, Mail, Super) | Not listed | Pro only |
| Cloud models, file transcription | Not listed | Pro only |
The docs are more detailed, so plan on them: Free is an offline voice keyboard with no AI cleanup, and AI modes and Meetings need Pro or the trial words.
Lena's math is simple by now. She'd spend the 3,000 trial words in her first two days, then pick Annual at $84.99. If she's still using it daily a year from now and expects three more years, switching to Lifetime saves money from there.
Superwhisper privacy and offline use
Local models keep everything on your device. The privacy policy (last updated October 8, 2026) says: "When you use a local model, your audio and transcripts never leave your device." The docs add that "Local voice models transcribe without an internet connection."
Offline AI formatting is narrow. It "needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode. Other AI processing needs the internet." The home page FAQ adds that offline models "only run really well on Apple Silicon macs."
Cloud audio isn't stored, or used for training. Superwhisper's cloud models process audio "in memory" and don't store it; third-party providers such as OpenAI "process it under their own terms." The policy says: "Your data is not used for training AI models or any other machine learning purposes."
Two settings to check on day one:
- Recordings are kept until you delete them, by default. Set a retention period if you dictate anything confidential.
- Super mode reads more than your words: on-screen, selected and recently copied text, and with application context also the date, your full name and your computer name.
For teams, the compliance page offers a SOC 2 report under NDA and a data processing addendum.
Superwhisper review of the limits, in its own words
Each limit below comes from a Superwhisper page. They aren't flaws, only the edges of a configurable voice keyboard.
| Limit | What Superwhisper's page says | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| AI cleanup on Free | Up to 2 modes, "no AI processing" | Anyone who wants filler words removed without paying |
| Offline AI | Needs S1-mini in Message or Mail; "Other AI processing needs the internet" | Anyone who wants Super or Custom modes offline |
| Older hardware | Offline models run well only on Apple Silicon; Windows without Vulkan is "much slower" | Intel Mac and older PC owners |
| Meetings | macOS only; Windows gets a Meeting mode preset | Anyone whose meetings happen away from a Mac |
| Translation | Any language into English only | Anyone who needs text in a language other than English |
| Setup | You pick models and modes yourself | Anyone who wants it to work with no decisions |
For Lena, none of these is a blocker. For Keisha, the meetings row decides it.
The Superwhisper fit test: 10 questions
These questions tell you whether Superwhisper is worth testing at all. Count your yes answers.
- Do you write for more than an hour a day in email, chat, documents or code?
- Is most of that writing done on a Mac or Windows PC, not a phone?
- Is your Mac Apple Silicon, or does your PC have a GPU with Vulkan support?
- Do you sometimes work without a reliable connection?
- Do clients or your employer expect sensitive words to stay on your device?
- Would you enjoy writing a custom mode for one task, such as a prompt for your coding agent?
- Do you dictate to coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor?
- Are you happy to spend an hour on setup to get the output you want?
- Do you expect to use a voice keyboard for three years or more (the Lifetime break-even)?
- Are your spoken words meant for a text box, not a conversation with another person?
8 to 10 yes: Superwhisper is built for you. Spend the trial words in your three most-used apps, then pick a plan with the table above.
5 to 7 yes: test it against Wispr Flow with the 5-day plan in our Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow comparison.
4 or fewer, or "no" to question 10: a voice keyboard may be the wrong tool. Read the alternatives below.

Superwhisper alternatives
| If you want | Look at |
|---|---|
| Clean text with no setup, the same on four platforms | Wispr Flow (see our Wispr Flow review); its data controls page says "Transcription always occurs on the cloud" |
| Free dictation with nothing to install | Apple Dictation, Gboard voice typing or Windows voice typing, built into your device |
| One file transcribed, without an app | The free audio to text converter |
| A conversation turned into a summary and follow-up | ParrotNotes |

When you need a note, not a keyboard: ParrotNotes
Keisha doesn't need words in a text box. She needs the owner's renewal date, three coverage questions and the quote she promised, captured from a 25-minute conversation and turned into a follow-up. That's the job ParrotNotes is built for.
Open ParrotNotes on your phone, tap record, and set it on the table while you and a customer talk. Recording keeps going with the screen locked, and no bot joins anything. When you stop, you get the transcript, an AI summary, action items and a drafted follow-up email. Here's how AI meeting notes work without a bot.
| Superwhisper | ParrotNotes | |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | Typing by voice into any app | Turning talk into a finished note |
| What you get when you stop | Text where your cursor is | Transcript, AI summary, action items, follow-up email draft |
| In-person conversations on a phone | Meetings is Mac only | Yes, on iPhone and Android |
| Transcript in another language | Translation into English only | Translation on Pro, 99+ languages |
| AI on the free plan | AI modes need Pro or trial words | AI summary on every recording, plus 5 AI-powered recordings a month |
| Works offline | Yes, with local models | Recording works offline; transcription needs a connection |
What ParrotNotes costs (parrotnotes.app/pricing, checked October 23, 2026):
- Free: 100 minutes of recording a month, an AI summary on every recording, 5 AI-powered recordings a month (insights, action items, sales frameworks and chat), and unlimited written notes. No credit card.
- Pro: $19.99 a month, or $14.99 a month billed annually. 3,000 minutes a month, recordings up to 3 hours, every AI feature on every recording, speaker identification, transcription and translation in 99+ languages, and AI search across your notes. On iPhone, Android and Mac.
Plenty of people would use Superwhisper at the desk and ParrotNotes in the car.
The next week, Keisha recorded her visit to a taco restaurant group with the phone face down on the table. Back in her car, she had a summary with the renewal date, two coverage gaps and three action items before she pulled out of the lot. (Still a composite.) If your work sounds more like hers than Lena's, download ParrotNotes free and record your next conversation.
Superwhisper review verdict
Superwhisper does what it promises for the job it chose: you talk, and text lands in any app, shaped by modes you control, with the option to keep your voice on your own device. Pro starts at $8.49 a month, and Lifetime pays for itself against Annual in about three years.
Its limits, in its own words: AI cleanup needs Pro, offline AI works in two modes, local models want Apple Silicon, Meetings stay on the Mac, and setup is yours. So this Superwhisper review ends with a test, not a score. Answer the 10 questions, spend the 3,000 trial words on purpose, and buy the plan the break-even table points to.
And if what you need is the conversation itself, captured on your phone and turned into a summary, action items and a follow-up, that's a different tool. Try ParrotNotes free on your next meeting or debrief, and see what comes back.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Superwhisper free?
Yes. Superwhisper's Plans docs, checked October 23, 2026, list unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary and up to two modes without AI processing. New users also get 3,000 words of every Pro feature.
How much does Superwhisper Pro cost?
On October 23, 2026, Superwhisper Pro was $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 as a one-time lifetime license, with the same features on each. Verified students, educators and non-profits get 40% off on superwhisper.com, and every individual plan has a 30-day refund.
Does Superwhisper work offline?
Yes, with local voice models. Superwhisper's docs say local models transcribe without an internet connection, but offline AI formatting needs the local S1-mini model in Message or Mail mode. Offline models run best on Apple Silicon Macs.
Is Superwhisper safe and private?
Superwhisper's privacy policy says audio and transcripts never leave your device with a local model, its cloud models don't store audio, and your data isn't used to train AI models. Recordings are kept until you delete them, so set a retention period.
Does Superwhisper work on Windows and Android?
Yes. Superwhisper runs on Windows 10 and 11, and on Android phones as a floating bubble. Windows doesn't have coding agent integrations or Meetings yet (it has a Meeting mode preset instead). Tablets and iPads aren't supported.
What is a good alternative to Superwhisper?
For clean text with no setup, Wispr Flow; for free dictation, the voice typing built into your phone or PC. For in-person conversations captured on a phone and turned into a summary and action items, ParrotNotes has a free plan with an AI summary on every recording.
