Lucía is a commercial insurance broker in San Antonio. Her Thursday was a walk-through of a client's warehouse, a renewal lunch with a restaurant owner who switched between Spanish and English every few sentences, and a site visit to a roofing contractor. Read AI sat on her laptop, waiting for a Zoom call that never came. (Lucía is a composite, not a real person.)
That's the most common reason people search for a Read AI alternative. Read is built around the video call: an AI agent that joins Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet from your calendar. When your meetings happen across a table, switch languages, or include people who'd rather not see a bot in the participant list, a different tool fits better.
This guide sorts six Read AI alternatives by the reason you're leaving. Every price, plan, platform, and language count was checked on the vendor's own site on October 15, 2026, with the page linked.
A disclosure: ParrotNotes publishes this blog, and ParrotNotes is first on the list because it's built for weeks like Lucía's. The tables show the same facts for every tool so you can disagree. If you already know your meetings happen in a room, try ParrotNotes free and come back for the rest.
Why people look for a Read AI alternative
Read's own help center draws the lines. In web mode the AI agent joins the call as a participant; when you record locally on the desktop or phone app, there is "no AI agent in the call", but Read "does not know who is speaking" and produces "a transcript without speaker attribution" (web mode vs desktop mode). Meetings with several languages "are not fully supported by Read and may produce inconsistent results" (supported languages), and the free plan covers 5 meeting transcripts a month, each up to an hour (read.ai/pricing, checked October 15, 2026).
Our Read AI review covers what Read does well, its pricing, privacy, and a 10-question fit test, so none of that is repeated here.

Match the reason you're leaving to the alternative
Most people leave Read for one specific reason. Find yours in the left column, and the right column is your shortlist.
| Your reason for leaving Read | What Read's pages say | Alternatives that answer it |
|---|---|---|
| Clients don't like a bot in the call | The agent joins as a participant in web mode | ParrotNotes, Granola, Jamie (no bot on any plan) |
| Most meetings happen in a room | The mobile app records in person, without speaker labels | ParrotNotes (speaker identification on Pro), Granola, Otter, Notta |
| Meetings switch between languages | Mixed-language meetings are "not fully supported" | ParrotNotes (99+ languages with translation on Pro), Notta (bilingual transcription) |
| You need a language Read doesn't cover | "20+ languages" on the free plan card | ParrotNotes, Jamie (99+ each), Notta (58) |
| Five meetings a month isn't enough to judge it | Free covers 5 meeting transcripts, up to an hour each | ParrotNotes (summary on every recording), Fathom, Otter |

The six Read AI alternatives, one by one
1. ParrotNotes: in-person meetings on the phone you carry
ParrotNotes is the Read AI alternative for people whose meetings have no link to join. There's no bot and no calendar to connect. Open the app, tap record, and set the phone on the table or keep it in your pocket; recording carries on with the screen locked. When you stop, you get the transcript, an AI summary, extracted action items, and a drafted follow-up email before you're back in the car.
What's on parrotnotes.app/pricing as of October 15, 2026:
- Free ($0): 100 minutes of recording a month, an AI summary on every recording, 5 AI-powered recordings a month (insights, action items, chat, and the BANT, MEDDIC, and SPIN sales frameworks), and unlimited written notes.
- Pro ($19.99 a month, or $14.99 a month billed annually): 3,000 minutes a month, recordings up to 3 hours, every AI feature on unlimited recordings, speaker identification, multilingual transcription with translation in 99+ languages, AI search across your notes, MCP connectors, docx and PDF export, and no ads.
- Apps: iOS, Android, and macOS.
Three things put it first for the in-person reader. It's phone-first, so iPhone and Android get the same app. Speaker identification on Pro tells you whether the buyer or the plant manager asked for the revised quote. And the languages: Lucía's Spanish-and-English lunch comes back as one transcript, translated into the language she sets. Recording works offline; the transcript and summary arrive once you're connected.
Best for: field reps, brokers, consultants, and anyone who meets in a room and wants notes done before the next meeting.
2. Granola: a bot-free notepad on the laptop and phone
Granola is the bot-free Read AI alternative most video-call teams try first. Its pricing page lists "Bot-free, device-audio capture" and "Desktop, iOS, Android & Apple Watch apps" on every plan. Basic is $0 with 30 days of meeting history, Business $14 per user a month, and Enterprise $35.
On the phone it's an in-person tool. Granola's mobile guide says "Phones don't let apps capture audio from other apps", that the mobile app is "designed for in-person meetings", and that "Granola Chat is currently available on iPhone only". Its language page lists 31 languages on desktop and 17 on mobile, where it "will analyze the transcript and choose a single language". The pricing page also lists "Audio deleted after transcription". Our Granola AI review and Granola AI alternatives go deeper.
Best for: a laptop-first week of video calls, with the phone for the occasional coffee meeting in one language.
3. Jamie: bot-free, EU-hosted, 99+ languages
Jamie's homepage says it "runs directly on your device and does not require a meeting bot to join your calls", "captures in-person meetings from your laptop or your phone", and keeps "Storage and processing" within "the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK". The platforms it lists are Windows, macOS, iOS, and the web.
The pricing page is in euros and counts AI notes, not minutes. Free is €0 with 10 AI notes a month and a 30-minute meeting limit; Plus is €21 with 20 notes and a 2-hour limit; Pro is €39 a month billed annually with unlimited notes. "Notes & transcripts in 99+ languages" and in-person meetings are on every plan. Our Jamie AI note taker review works through the note-based model.
Best for: a European team that needs EU hosting and has a handful of meetings a day.
4. Otter.ai: the agent swap, with phone apps
Otter is the Read AI alternative for people who are happy with a meeting agent and want a different one. Its pricing page lists iOS and Android apps on every plan, so you can also press record at a counter. Basic is free with 300 minutes a month and 30 minutes per conversation. Pro's standard price is $16.99 per user a month, or $8.33 billed annually, for 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation (the lower Pro prices on the page carry a footnote: "Offer valid only with an India-issued credit card"). Transcription is listed in "English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese".
If your reason for leaving Read was the agent itself, Otter's design is the same idea. Our Otter.ai review covers where that shows.
Best for: a video-call-heavy week where the agent isn't the problem.
5. Notta: 58 languages with translation
Notta answers the language reason. Its multilingual page says it is "compatible with 58 languages, with translation also available for over 40 languages", with bilingual transcription to "Transcribe two languages at once". The mobile page offers apps to "Record on iOS & Android".
On the pricing page, Free is $0 with 120 minutes a month, "Up to 3 minutes per conversation", and 10 AI summaries. Pro is $8.17 a month billed annually ($97.99 a year) with 1,800 minutes, up to 5 hours per recording, 100 AI summaries, and transcript translation. The three-minute free cap means a real meeting needs Pro, so treat a month of Pro as the trial. More in our Notta alternatives guide.
Best for: long recordings in many languages, with AI notes second.
6. Fathom: a free note taker for calls, now partly bot-free
Fathom's pricing page offers a Free plan, "Free forever", with "Instant AI call summaries", and a "Choice of bot-free (in beta) or bot capture", where bot-free is a "Beta feature for Mac". Premium is $20 per user a month or $16 billed annually. Its devices article lists Mac and Windows computers and an iOS app to "record in-person conversations"; Android isn't mentioned. See our Fathom alternatives for the full picture.
Best for: a Mac user on video calls who wants to try bot-free capture without paying first.

Which Read AI alternative fits your week
Three composite weeks show how the tables read; none of them are customers.
Lucía, from the opening. Fifteen in-person meetings a week on an Android phone, a third of them in Spanish and English at once. The phone column leaves ParrotNotes, Granola, Otter, and Notta; the mixed-language row leaves ParrotNotes and Notta. Her deciding test is the renewal lunch: one transcript she can send to the underwriter in English, with speaker labels showing the owner, not his manager, asked about the higher deductible. For more on meetings that cross languages, see our guide to bilingual meeting notes.
Ben, a customer success manager. Eight Zoom and Teams calls a day from a desk, and his clients are used to Read's agent. Nothing in the matrix applies to him, so the honest advice is to stay on Read. Not everyone needs a Read AI alternative.
Katrin, a consultant. Two client workshops a week in Frankfurt, in German with English-speaking guests, plus a few video calls. Her firm wants EU hosting, which puts Jamie on her list; ParrotNotes Pro's translation, which turns a German workshop into an English transcript, puts it there too. Her deciding test is a full half-day workshop, then a search for one remark from the last hour.

Test before you switch: a three-meeting trial plan
Don't cancel Read on the strength of a table. Run your shortlist through three real meetings in one week.
- Your most typical meeting. For Lucía, a client walk-through; for Katrin, a workshop. Judge the summary: could you send it without rewriting?
- Your hardest meeting. The noisy room, the mixed-language lunch, the six-person debrief. Judge the transcript: are names, numbers, and speakers right?
- The meeting that made you look. Whatever sent you searching for a Read AI alternative. If the new tool doesn't fix that, it's the wrong tool.
Write down, for each meeting, how long it took from "stop" to a follow-up you could send. That number decides more than any feature list.
Whatever you test, ask before you record. Every tool here, ParrotNotes included, leaves consent to the person recording when there's no bot to announce itself. In the United States, federal law (18 U.S.C. § 2511(2)(d)) permits recording when you are "a party to the communication", but some states require every party's consent; our overview of one-party consent states covers the basics. This isn't legal advice.
Choosing your Read AI alternative
Read AI is a capable assistant built around the video call. If that's your week, like Ben's, keep it. If your meetings happen across a table, switch languages, or can't have a bot in the room, the reason you're leaving has already picked your Read AI alternative.
The short version: ParrotNotes for in-person meetings on the phone you carry, with 99+ languages and translation; Granola for a bot-free laptop notepad; Jamie for EU hosting; Otter.ai if you still want an agent; Notta for many languages at a low annual price; Fathom for free call summaries on a Mac.
If your week looks like Lucía's, download ParrotNotes free and make tomorrow's first meeting in the room your first recording. You'll have the summary, the action items, and a drafted follow-up before you start the engine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Read AI alternative for in-person meetings?
For meetings without a video link, the best Read AI alternative records on the phone you already carry and needs no bot. ParrotNotes is built for that on iOS, Android, and macOS, with an AI summary on every recording on the free plan and speaker identification and 99+ languages with translation on Pro. Vendor facts were checked on October 15, 2026.
Is there a free Read AI alternative?
Yes. ParrotNotes Free gives 100 minutes of recording a month with an AI summary on every recording. Granola, Otter, Jamie, Notta and Fathom also have free plans, each with its own limits. Checked October 15, 2026.
Which Read AI alternatives work without a bot?
ParrotNotes, Granola, and Jamie record without a meeting bot on every plan. Fathom offers bot-free capture as a beta on Mac. Read itself has no bot when you record with its desktop or mobile app, but its help center says it then produces a transcript without speaker attribution.
Does Read AI handle meetings in two languages?
Read's supported languages article says meetings where several languages are spoken are not fully supported and may produce inconsistent results. If your meetings mix languages, ParrotNotes Pro covers 99+ languages with translation, and Notta offers bilingual transcription.
Is Read AI better than Otter?
They are built on the same idea, an AI agent that joins your video calls, so the choice comes down to plan limits and features. Read's free plan covers 5 meetings a month and Otter Basic covers 300 minutes. If the agent is the reason you're leaving, a bot-free tool such as ParrotNotes, Granola, or Jamie is the more direct swap.
