Tomás and Lucía searched Read AI vs Fireflies in the same week. (Both are composites, not real people.)
Tomás is a customer success manager with six video calls a day, and he wants one place to search what every customer said. Lucía sells packaging to food plants. She meets buyers on the factory floor, half her conversations switch between Spanish and English, and her legal team just asked what her note-taker does with recordings.
Both tools join Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet and write summaries with action items. The difference is what they meter: Read AI counts meetings, while Fireflies counts storage minutes and AI credits. They also handle consent, speaker names and AI training differently.
This comparison is built from each vendor's pricing page and help center, read on October 29, 2026, not from a hands-on test. You'll get prices, limits, privacy, five meeting months priced in both, and a check of what each vendor says about the other.
A disclosure: ParrotNotes publishes this blog and appears in one section near the end, for meetings that happen in a room. If your week looks like Lucía's, you can try ParrotNotes free at your next customer visit.

Read AI meters meetings; Fireflies meters storage
Read AI's free plan covers 5 meeting transcripts and reports a month, each up to an hour. Every paid plan has unlimited meetings and storage, so the only limit is how long one meeting runs. Past the cap, Read "will leave the meeting" and builds the report from what it captured (max recording duration article).
Fireflies' free plan transcribes more freely but keeps less. "Unlimited transcription*" carries a footnote: "For shared bot meetings, chrome extension, and mobile app." Storage is 400 minutes for the whole team, described as "Total storage for your meetings", not a monthly refill. Pro raises it to 8,000 minutes a seat; Business and Enterprise remove the cap.
Fireflies adds AI credits
Fireflies runs its advanced tools, such as AI Skills and Voice Agents, on AI credits: 20 on Free and Pro, 30 on Business, 50 on Enterprise. Its AI credits article says plan credits "are one-time and do not expire", and that "everyone in your workspace draws from the same balance."
Bundles start at 50 credits for $5 a month. If you're on a credit subscription and run out, "Fireflies automatically upgrades you to the next higher tier." Transcription never uses credits, and Read AI has no credit meter at all.

Features that decide it day to day
Getting into the meeting
Read AI joins Zoom and Teams as a participant. On Google Meet it can join or "record without joining through Google Meet native recording" (platforms article). On Zoom you "must connect your Zoom account to Read and be in the meeting." For Webex, GoTo Meeting or RingCentral, its desktop app records audio from any app on your computer.
Fireflies joins Zoom, Meet, Teams and "10+" other platforms as "Fireflies.ai Notetaker". Its Chrome extension records Google Meet "without Fireflies bot" on every plan, and its iOS and Android apps offer "unlimited in-person recording."
Meeting length
This is the clearest split. Read Pro handles a 4-hour meeting. Fireflies Pro stops at 2 hours; you need Business for 3 or Enterprise for 4.
Who said what
Both label speakers in a video call they join, and both struggle when recording locally. Read's consent article says that in desktop or mobile mode, "Read AI does not know who is speaking. It produces a transcript without speaker attribution."
Fireflies' recording FAQ says "Speaker name detection only works when" Fireflies joins a video meeting or you use the Chrome extension. Uploaded files get "generic labels like Speaker 1, Speaker 2."
Languages
Read's languages article lists 35 languages for meeting reports, and warns that "Meetings where multiple different languages are spoken are not fully supported."
Fireflies lists "Transcription in 100+ languages", but its FAQ calls English primary, with Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian "and 100+ other languages in beta." Its Multi-Language Mode for mixed-language calls covers 60+ languages, on Business and Enterprise only, in beta.
Search, integrations and video
- Search: Read's Ask Read connects "your meetings, emails, messages, and more" on every plan. Fireflies' AskFred assistant is "Limited" on Free.
- Integrations: Read Pro adds Notion, Salesforce, HubSpot, Jira, Confluence, Zapier and webhooks. Fireflies lists "All" integrations from Pro.
- Video: Fireflies Pro captures meeting video at 720p; Read keeps playback for Enterprise. One wrinkle: Fireflies' recording FAQ says video "requires a Business plan or higher", contradicting its pricing page. Check before you buy Pro for video.
Read AI vs Fireflies privacy and consent
For many buyers, this section decides it. Here's what each vendor's own pages say.
Does either one train AI on your meetings?
Read AI's data article answers "Does Read AI sell your data?" with "No." On training: "Not without your explicit opt-in."
The exception is a Customer Experience Improvement Program, which "about 10 to 15 percent of users choose to join." You can also switch off transcript storage and still get summaries.
Fireflies' security article is more absolute: meeting content "is never used to train any AI models." It also describes a "Zero Data Retention policy" with its AI vendors.
How people on the call find out, and stop it
- Read AI, as an agent, "may post a chat message announcing itself and identifying who invited it." Anyone can type "Read Stop", or "Opt Out", which makes Read leave and "delete all measured data from that session."
- Fireflies "is always visible in the participant list to ensure compliance." Its removal article lists a "/ff leave" chat command, and "If Fireflies is removed before 3 minutes, no transcript or notes will be created." An optional Meeting Compliance setting shows a pre-meeting disclaimer, and "If someone opts out, Fireflies will not join the meeting."
When there's no bot, consent is on you
Both tools record from a laptop or phone with nothing in the participant list. Read says that in local mode, "the user running Read AI is responsible for telling other participants and collecting consent." The same holds for Fireflies' apps and extension, and for ParrotNotes.
Some US states require everyone's consent; our guide to one-party consent states covers the basics. This isn't legal advice.
HIPAA and certifications
Both list SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliance; Fireflies adds ISO 42001. HIPAA sits on different plans. Read AI puts it on Enterprise+, which "requires a minimum of 5 licenses." Fireflies puts it on Enterprise, with a BAA "available on Enterprise with Private Storage."
For a three-person team that needs a BAA, that's 5 × $29.75 × 12 = $1,785 a year on Read, against 3 × $39 × 12 = $1,404 on Fireflies (ask whether Private Storage costs extra). ParrotNotes doesn't sign BAAs, so it isn't an option there.
Lawsuits
In December 2025, a proposed class action, Cruz v. Fireflies. AI Corp., was filed in Illinois federal court under the state's Biometric Information Privacy Act. It alleges Fireflies' speaker recognition collected voiceprints from meeting participants without written consent (Robinson & Cole summary). These are allegations, not findings.
Five meeting months, priced in both
Here are five meeting months run through both vendors' published limits as of October 29, 2026. The people are composites; the limits and prices are the vendors'.
1. Hana, recruiter: 12 Zoom calls a month, 45 minutes each (540 minutes)
- Read AI: Free covers 5 calls. Pro covers all 12, at $180 a year.
- Fireflies: Free's 400 total minutes fill in the first month. Pro's 8,000 minutes last about 15 months at this pace: $120 a year.
- Cheapest full fit: Fireflies Pro, $120.
2. Tomás, customer success: 6 calls a day, 30 minutes each (3,780 minutes)
- Read AI: Pro covers all 126 calls with unlimited storage: $180.
- Fireflies: Pro's storage fills in about 2 months. Business removes the cap: $228.
- Cheapest full fit: Read AI Pro, $180.
3. Grace, training lead: 4 workshops of 2.5 hours, plus 8 one-hour calls
- Read AI: Pro's 4-hour cap covers the workshops: $180.
- Fireflies: Pro stops each workshop at 2 hours. Business allows 3: $228.
- Cheapest full fit: Read AI Pro, $180.
4. Lucía, packaging rep: 15 plant visits, 40 minutes, half in Spanish and English
- Read AI: the phone app records the room and Pro covers the volume, but there's no speaker attribution, and mixed languages are "not fully supported."
- Fireflies: the phone app records the room and Pro's storage lasts about 13 months, but speaker names only come from joined calls or the Chrome extension. Multi-Language Mode needs Business, and its help article doesn't mention phone recordings.
- Cheapest full fit: neither, for the bilingual half.
5. Sam's team: 8 account executives, 20 one-hour demos each, video replay wanted
- Read AI: Pro has Salesforce and HubSpot but no playback. Enterprise: 8 × $22.50 × 12 = $2,160 a year.
- Fireflies: Pro records video, but each seat's 8,000 minutes fill in under 7 months. Business: 8 × $19 × 12 = $1,824.
- Cheapest full fit: Fireflies Business, $1,824.
| Meeting month | Cheapest plan that covers it | Year one |
|---|---|---|
| Hana: 12 calls of 45 minutes | Fireflies Pro (annual) | $120 |
| Tomás: 126 calls of 30 minutes | Read AI Pro (annual) | $180 |
| Grace: workshops over 2 hours | Read AI Pro (annual) | $180 |
| Lucía: in person, two languages | Neither fully | n/a |
| Sam's team: 8 reps, video replay | Fireflies Business (annual) | $1,824 |
Computed from annual prices on read.ai/plans-pricing and fireflies.ai/pricing, October 29, 2026: Read Pro $180 and Enterprise $270 per user a year; Fireflies Pro $120 and Business $228 per seat a year. Storage runway: 8,000 minutes ÷ minutes recorded a month.
The pattern: Fireflies wins on price when you record modestly, or when a team wants video without Enterprise. Read AI wins once you record heavily or run meetings over 2 hours, because it never meters storage.
What the vendors' own comparison pages get wrong
Both companies publish a head-to-head: Read AI's comparison and Fireflies' blog post (June 29, 2026). We checked six claims against each vendor's own pages on October 29, 2026. Some may have been right when written.
| Claim | Who says it | What the vendor's own page says |
|---|---|---|
| Read AI supports 26 languages | Fireflies' blog post | Read's help center lists 35 for meeting reports |
| Fireflies video playback is on Business and up | Fireflies' blog post | Fireflies' pricing page lists video recording, 720p, on Pro |
| HIPAA compliance, with no plan named | Read AI's comparison page | Read's pricing page puts HIPAA on Enterprise+, which requires 5+ licenses |
| Fireflies Free has "20 AI credits/month" | Read AI's comparison page | Fireflies says plan credits "are one-time and do not expire" |
| Fireflies needs its desktop app for bot-free capture | Read AI's comparison page | Fireflies' pricing page lists "Record using Chrome extension without Fireflies bot" on every plan |
| Read AI supports "20+" or "16+" languages | Read AI's own pricing page | Read's help center lists 35 |
For meetings in a room: ParrotNotes
Read AI and Fireflies are built around the calendar invite and the video link, with phone apps added on. Lucía's month has neither. Her buyer switches to Spanish mid-sentence, and she wants the follow-up email written before she drives to the next plant.
That's the job ParrotNotes is built for. Open the app on your phone, tap record and set it on the table. When you stop, you get a transcript, a summary, the action items and a drafted follow-up email, with no bot and no calendar to connect.
| Read AI | Fireflies.ai | ParrotNotes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built around | An agent on Zoom, Teams and Meet | A notetaker bot, plus extension and apps | Conversations in any room, on your phone |
| Meeting bot | Agent in web mode; none in the apps | Bot by default; extension and apps without | None, ever |
| Speaker labels in a phone recording | None | Name detection only in joined calls or the extension | Speaker identification (Pro) |
| Two languages in one meeting | "Not fully supported" | Multi-Language Mode, Business and up, beta | Code-switching in one recording (Pro) |
| Cheapest paid plan, billed annually | $15 a month | $10 a month | $14.99 a month |
Read AI and Fireflies facts from their pricing pages and help centers; ParrotNotes facts from parrotnotes.app/pricing. Checked October 29, 2026.
ParrotNotes Free gives you 100 minutes a month (up to 30 minutes a recording) and an auto-summary on every recording. ParrotNotes Pro is $19.99 a month, or $14.99 billed annually, with 3,000 minutes a month, 3-hour recordings, 99+ languages with code-switching and translation, and speaker identification.
Lucía's 600 minutes fit well inside Pro, and her bilingual visits come back as one transcript in the language she picks. Many readers keep Read AI or Fireflies for video calls and use ParrotNotes for the room. See our guides to bilingual meeting notes and the best AI note taker for in-person meetings.

The verdict on Read AI vs Fireflies
Choose Read AI if you record a lot, run meetings longer than 2 hours, or want unmetered search across meetings, email and chat. Pro at $15 a user a month billed annually has no meeting count, storage cap or credit meter.
Choose Fireflies if you want the cheapest paid seat, video from Pro, or more transcription languages, and your meetings stay under 2 hours. Pro is $10 a seat billed annually; watch the 8,000-minute storage cap and the credit pool.
On privacy, both say they don't train AI on your meetings by default, and both let people on the call send the bot away. If neither fits, see our Read AI alternatives, Fireflies alternatives, Read AI vs Otter and Fathom vs Fireflies. And if your key conversations happen across a table, try ParrotNotes free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Read AI or Fireflies cheaper?
Fireflies is cheaper per seat: Pro is $10 a month billed annually, against $15 for Read AI Pro. Read AI becomes cheaper once you record heavily or hold meetings over 2 hours, because Fireflies Pro caps storage at 8,000 minutes a seat and recordings at 2 hours, and Business, which lifts both, is $19. Prices checked October 29, 2026.
Does Read AI or Fireflies use my meetings to train AI?
Both say no by default. Read AI doesn't train on your meetings "without your explicit opt-in", apart from an improvement program that some users choose to join. Fireflies says meeting content "is never used to train any AI models."
Can people on the call stop Read AI or Fireflies?
Yes, when it joins as a bot. Typing "Opt Out" makes Read AI leave and delete the session's data. Fireflies can be removed from the participant list or with "/ff leave". With a laptop or phone app there's no bot, so the person recording must ask for consent.
Which supports more languages, Read AI or Fireflies?
Fireflies lists 100+ transcription languages, English primary and most in beta, with Multi-Language Mode on Business and Enterprise. Read AI lists 35 and says mixed-language meetings are "not fully supported". ParrotNotes Pro covers 99+ languages and handles conversations that switch between them.
Can Read AI or Fireflies record in-person meetings?
Yes, both have iOS and Android apps. Read AI's phone recordings have no speaker labels, and Fireflies detects speaker names only in calls it joins or through its Chrome extension. For meetings mostly in person, a phone-first app such as ParrotNotes is built for the job.
