Screen Recording to MP3
Recorded a call, a webinar or a walkthrough with your screen recorder and only need what was said? Drop the recording here and download the sound as an MP3. It works with the files that iPhone, Mac, Windows and Android recorders save, and the recording is converted on your device, not uploaded.
Drop your screen recording here or click to browse
MOV, MP4, M4V or WebM, up to 500 MB and 30 minutes. A Mac's .mov needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
The video is converted in your browser and is not uploaded.
How to turn a screen recording into an MP3
Find the file, check it has sound, then convert it here.
- 1
Find the recording
Each recorder saves to its own place: Photos on an iPhone or Android phone, the folder you picked on a Mac, the Videos folder on Windows. The table below lists them.
- 2
Play it once with the sound on
If you hear nothing in a video player, the MP3 will be silent too. A recording made with the microphone off may have no sound track at all; the section further down explains what to do.
- 3
Drop it here and download the MP3
Keep MP3 at 128 kbps, or 64 to 96 kbps if it is only talking, press Extract audio, listen to the preview and download. For a Mac recording (.mov), use Chrome, Edge or Firefox rather than Safari.
Where your screen recording is saved
The built-in recorders, their shortcut and where the file ends up.
| Device | Built-in recorder | Where to find the file | File type |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Screen Recording button in Control Center | Photos app, in your Library | Video; check the ending once it is on a computer |
| Mac | Screenshot app: Shift-Command-5 | The folder set under Options > Save to | .mov, named Screen Recording with the date and time |
| Windows 11 | Snipping Tool: Windows logo key + Shift + R | Where you save it; recent versions also keep a copy in Videos | MP4 |
| Windows (games and apps) | Xbox Game Bar: Windows key + Alt + R | Videos > Captures | MP4 |
| Android | Screen record tile in Quick Settings | Photos > Collections > On this device > Movies | Video, usually MP4 |
| Browser recorders and extensions | Varies | Your Downloads folder | Often WebM |
Record the sound next time
Most silent screen recordings are a setting, not a fault. Before the next one:
iPhone and iPad
Open Control Center, press and hold the gray Record button instead of tapping it, then tap the Microphone button so it turns on. Apple notes that some apps might not allow you to record audio or video.
Mac
Press Shift-Command-5, open Options and pick a microphone under Microphone; None leaves the recording without sound. Apple's guide offers only microphones there, so the Mac's own sound (a video playing, the other side of a call) needs a different recorder.
Windows Snipping Tool
Since version 11.2307.44.0, Snipping Tool can record your PC's sound and your microphone. Turn both on in the recording bar before you press Start, or set the defaults in the app's settings, and update the app from the Microsoft Store if the options are missing.
Xbox Game Bar
Press Windows key + Alt + M during a recording to turn the microphone on or off. Microsoft suggests choosing All under the Capturing settings so every computer sound is included.
Android
After you tap Screen record, choose whether to record audio before you press Start. Some phones offer the phone's own sound, the microphone or both; the choice is made on that screen.
When the recording has no sound
If the converter says it could not read a sound track, the recording most likely has none: it was made with the microphone set to off or None, or the app on screen blocked audio capture. No converter can get sound out of a file that never recorded it, so the only fix is to record again with the sound turned on.
If the MP3 comes out but is silent, the sound track exists and is empty. That happens when the microphone was muted during the recording, or the wrong input was picked, for example a headset that was not plugged in. Check the input in the recorder's options before the next recording and do a ten-second test first.
If the recording is a video call, the meeting app's own recording often has better sound than a screen recording, because it records every speaker directly. The guides below show how in Zoom, Teams and Google Meet.

Need the words from the recording, not just the sound?
If you screen-record calls to keep what people said, ParrotNotes records the conversation, transcribes it and summarizes it, without a screen recording to convert afterwards.
