WebM to MP3 Converter

Drop a .webm screen recording, browser audio clip or web voice message and download an MP3 that any player, editor or upload form accepts. Video WebM files work too: you get the sound, the picture is left out. Free, no account, and the file is not uploaded.

Drop your WebM recording here or click to browse

WEBM, M4A, MP4, WAV, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, AAC or MP3, up to 100 MB and 30 minutes.

The file is converted in your browser and is not uploaded.

Where WebM files come from

WebM is the web's own media format, so it turns up wherever something was recorded or saved in a browser.

  • Screen and tab recorders

Browser extensions and web screen recorders often save a .webm file, because Chrome and Edge record WebM when a page captures the screen, a tab or the microphone.

  • Website voice recorders

Online voice recorders, feedback widgets and web apps that let you leave a voice message usually hand you the recording as WebM audio.

  • Downloaded videos

Some video sites, web apps and download tools save video as .webm. The converter keeps the sound and drops the picture.

  • Recorded calls in the browser

A webinar or online meeting recorded with a browser-based tool can arrive as a long WebM video when all you need is the audio.

How it works

Three steps, all in your browser.

  1. 1

    Drop the WebM file

Drag the .webm file onto the converter or click to browse. Audio-only and video WebM files both work, up to 100 MB and 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Pick a bitrate

Keep 128 kbps for a screen recording with voices and system sound. For a voice message or a talk, 64 kbps is enough and makes a smaller file.

  3. 3

    Download the MP3

Your browser decodes the Opus or Vorbis audio inside the WebM and writes an MP3 on your device, with the same name and an .mp3 ending.

WebM video: what happens to the picture

A WebM file is a container. The WebM Project's guidelines say the video inside should be VP8 or VP9 and the audio Vorbis or Opus. This converter only reads the audio track, so a 30-minute screen recording becomes an MP3 of its sound: the picture is not kept, and the MP3 is far smaller than the video.

If a recording was made without the microphone or tab audio switched on, the WebM has no sound track at all. The converter then says it found no sound; play the file first to check. For MP4 or MOV videos, the Video to Audio Converter does the same job and can also save WAV.

Why turn WebM into MP3

  • Editors and podcast hosts

Many audio editors, podcast hosts and slide tools take MP3 or WAV and reject .webm, or treat it as a video they cannot open.

  • Phones, cars and players

Car stereos, older media players and some phone apps play MP3 but not WebM. An MP3 copy plays almost everywhere.

  • Sending and sharing

The sound of a screen recording as a 128 kbps MP3 is about 1 MB a minute, much smaller than the video, so it fits in an email or a chat.

Browser support for WebM

Conversion runs on the decoder your browser already has. If the browser cannot play a WebM file's sound, it cannot convert it here either.

BrowserConverts WebM?
Chrome (computer and Android)Yes: tested with Opus and Vorbis audio and VP9 video
EdgeYes (same engine as Chrome)
FirefoxYes
Safari 15 or later (macOS, iOS and iPadOS 15)Should, for WebM with Opus audio; if it fails, use Chrome, Edge or Firefox
Safari before version 15, and iPhones before iOS 15No: use another device or update
On iPhone and iPad, Chrome, Firefox and Edge run on Apple's WebKit engine, so before iOS 15 no browser on the device reads WebM audio.
