How do you calculate sales velocity?

Multiply the number of open opportunities by your win rate and your average deal value, then divide by the length of your sales cycle in days. 100 opportunities × 25% × 10,000 ÷ 50 days = 5,000 of revenue a day, or about 150,000 a month. It estimates how fast your current pipeline turns into revenue.

Which lever moves sales velocity most?

Improving any of the three multipliers by 10% raises velocity by 10%. Cutting the cycle by 10% raises it by a little more, about 11%, because the cycle is the divisor: in the example above that is 5,555.56 a day against 5,500. The list under the result sorts the four for your numbers, but the cheapest lever for your team to move is usually the one to work on first.

What counts as an opportunity and a cycle length?

Use the definitions your CRM already uses and keep them the same each time you measure. Opportunities are usually the qualified deals open now; cycle length is the average number of days from when a deal is created to when it closes, counted on recently closed deals. Changing either definition changes the number more than any real improvement.

Track it monthly and look at what moved it. A falling velocity with steady pipeline often means deals are stalling, which shows up in slower follow-ups and longer gaps between meetings. Same-day follow-up after each call is one of the simplest ways to shorten the cycle.
