Priya produces the morning politics podcast at a public radio station. Every day she uploads two hours of interviews, a colleague checks the quotes, and the clips go out with captions. Tom runs operations at a software company. His week is twenty Zoom and Teams calls, and what he wants is a summary and a list of who agreed to do what. (Priya and Tom are composites, not real people.)
Both of them typed "trint vs otter" into a search bar. The answer isn't the same for both, because Trint and Otter were built for different jobs.
This comparison is built from the vendors' own pages: Trint's plans page and help center, Otter's pricing page and help center, all checked on October 18, 2026.
One disclosure: we make ParrotNotes, a phone-first note taker for conversations in a room. It gets a short section near the end for readers whose work happens face to face. If that's you, try ParrotNotes free and come back for the Trint vs Otter details.
Trint vs Otter in short
Pick Trint if you work with recorded media: interviews, press conferences, broadcast feeds. You need several people to edit and verify the same transcript, translate it and caption the video. Trint is priced like the newsroom tool it is.
Pick Otter if most of your conversations are scheduled Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams calls in one of Otter's six languages, and you want notes, action items and a chat that searches across your meetings.
Look at a third option if your conversations happen across a table, in a car or on a site visit, or in languages neither tool covers well.

Built for different jobs: newsroom vs meetings
Trint's plans page sells transcription, translation, AI summaries and a Caption Editor for video subtitles, and its Business plan adds newsroom systems such as ENPS and Octopus. The finished product is a verified quote, a caption file or a rough cut.
Otter's homepage describes a meeting agent that can "automatically join all your Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet meetings." The finished product is a summary, action items and an answer to "what did we decide about the budget?"
Trint treats the transcript as a document a team edits. Otter treats the meeting as an event you want to remember. For the full story of each, see our Trint review and Otter.ai review; this page sticks to the head-to-head.
How each one captures audio
Trint: upload, or go live
Most Trint work starts with a file: upload audio or video and get a timed transcript linked to the recording. The second route is Trint Live. The Trint Live help article says it transcribes "in one of 30+ languages, which can be selected before starting," for up to three hours, and anyone in the Shared Drive gets access "once the live transcription begins." Business plans add Advanced Live from "your desktop, mobile, microphone or broadcast stream." Pro and Team get one hour of live transcription a month per seat.
Otter: a notetaker on your calendar
Otter's main route is the meeting agent. Connect your calendar, and it joins and transcribes your video calls as a visible participant.
Otter also says you can "record directly from your Mac or Windows desktop, mobile device, or your browser," and the desktop app records without a bot joining the call. File imports exist too, but they're capped: 3 in total on Basic, 10 a month on Pro.
What this means: if your audio arrives as files or broadcast feeds, Trint fits the way you already work. If your audio is scheduled video calls, Otter does the capturing for you.
Collaboration and editing
This is where Trint is strongest. The Team plan lets you "collaborate and edit your transcript in realtime with up to 5 team members" and create Shared Drives. A producer can follow a live press conference transcript while the reporter is still in the room, and an editor can click a quote and hear it before it runs.
Otter's collaboration is about the meeting rather than the document. You share a conversation with colleagues, and Otter AI Chat "searches across your meetings and connected apps to instantly answer questions." AI Chat queries are metered by plan: 20 a month on Basic, 50 on Pro and 200 on Business.
Priya's test: two people need to check the same quote against the audio, every day. That's Trint.
Tom's test: he needs to ask what was agreed across last week's calls. That's Otter.
Languages and translation
The language gap between the two is wide.
Trint's plans page lists "Unlimited audio and video transcriptions in 50+ languages" and "Unlimited translations in 70+ languages" on every plan. Live transcription is narrower: one language, chosen before you start, from 30+. Detecting several languages in one recording ("Automatic Language Recognition") is on the Business plan.
Otter's supported languages article is short: "Otter currently only supports English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified)." Asked whether it supports other languages such as Portuguese, the answer is "No." Translation happens in chat: "You can translate your conversations into other languages using Otter Chat."
For a reporter interviewing sources in Portuguese, Arabic or Hindi, that settles it in Trint's favor. For an English-speaking team on Zoom, it doesn't matter.
Apps and where they work
| Trint | Otter | |
|---|---|---|
| Web | Upload, edit, share, translate | Record in the browser, read and chat |
| Desktop | Mac and Windows app with Trint Live | Mac and Windows app, records without a bot |
| Mobile | iOS and Android: record, upload, read | iOS and Android: record, read |
| Connection | Mobile app "requires an internet connection at all times" | Not stated on the pages checked |

Trint's mobile app also needs iOS 17.6 or later. Its help article still uses older plan names, so go by the plans page for what each plan includes.
Trint vs Otter pricing
These are the list prices on each plans page. Otter's page also showed a 50% promotion on Pro when we checked; promotions change, so we use the list prices.
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trint Pro | $100 per seat a month | $79 per seat a month | Individuals; 50+ languages; 1 hour of live a month |
| Trint Team | $90 per seat a month | $69 per seat a month | 2 to 5 people; Shared Drives; realtime editing |
| Trint Business | Custom | Custom | Newsroom integrations, API, SSO, multi-language detection |
| Otter Basic | Free | Free | 300 minutes a month, 30 minutes per conversation |
| Otter Pro | $16.99 per user a month | $8.33 per user a month | 1,200 minutes, 90 minutes per conversation |
| Otter Business | $30 per user a month | $19.99 per user a month | Unlimited meetings, up to 4 hours each |
| Otter Enterprise | Demo | Demo | SSO, SCIM, API and webhooks |

Trint's "unlimited" is fair use: "Archival projects, continuous live transcription and bulk volume transcription projects aren't included." Otter meters minutes and conversation length; our Otter vs Fireflies comparison walks through how.
What year one costs
Worked from the list prices above:
| Who | Trint, monthly billing | Trint, annual billing | Otter, monthly billing | Otter, annual billing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One person (Trint Pro, Otter Pro) | $1,200 | $948 | $203.88 | $99.96 |
| Four-person team (Trint Team, Otter Business) | $4,320 | $3,312 | $1,440 | $959.52 |
The prices buy different things: Trint charges for a newsroom workflow, Otter for meeting capture. If you don't need Trint's editing and newsroom features, you pay for them anyway.
Free options
Trint has no free plan. Its 7-day free trial lets you "upload 3 audio or videos files," and "the first 5 minutes of the 3 files will be transcribed." Pick one clean file, one noisy one and one with several speakers.
Otter has a free Basic plan with the limits in the table above.
Pick by your week
Answer the question that matches your week:
- Do you edit transcripts with colleagues before they're published? Trint.
- Do you need captions or a rough cut from the same transcript? Trint.
- Do you interview people in languages outside Otter's six? Trint.
- Are most of your conversations scheduled video calls? Otter.
- Do you want a bot to join and take notes without you pressing record? Otter.
- Do you want to ask questions across all your meetings and push notes to Salesforce or HubSpot? Otter.
- Do your conversations happen in person, on your phone, with no meeting link? Neither is built for that first. Read the next section.
Priya answers yes to the first three. Tom answers yes to four, five and six. Whichever tool you choose, ask before you record: some US states require every party's consent, and our guide to one-party consent states explains the rules. This isn't legal advice.
For reporters weighing more than these two, our roundup of transcription software for journalists compares eight tools.
A third option for conversations in a room: ParrotNotes
Lucia is a freelance reporter and part-time sales rep for a coffee roaster. Almost none of her conversations has a meeting link: interviews in kitchens and market halls, client meetings at the counter, some in English, some in Spanish. (Lucia is a composite, not a real person.) Trint's newsroom features would go unused, and Otter's bot has no call to join.
ParrotNotes is built for her week. Open the app on your phone, tap record, put the phone on the table, and get a transcript and summary when you finish. There's no bot to invite.
| Trint | Otter | ParrotNotes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built for | Newsroom teams editing transcripts | Video meetings | Conversations in the room, on the phone you carry |
| Bot-free in-person capture | Upload or Live | Mobile and desktop apps | Yes, it's the core use |
| Transcription languages | 50+ (uploads) | Six | 99+, with translation |
| Free plan with AI summary on every recording | No free plan | Basic plan | Yes |
Trint and Otter facts from their plans and help pages; ParrotNotes facts from parrotnotes.app/pricing. Checked October 18, 2026.
ParrotNotes Free costs nothing and includes 100 minutes of recording a month, an automatic summary on every recording, 5 AI-powered recordings a month (summaries, insights, action items, sales frameworks and chat all work on those 5) and unlimited written notes.
ParrotNotes Pro is $19.99 a month, or $14.99 a month billed annually. It adds 3,000 minutes a month, recordings up to 3 hours, every AI feature on every recording, speaker identification, multilingual transcription with translation in 99+ languages, AI search across your notes, and docx and PDF export. It runs on iOS, Android and macOS, and recording works offline; transcription runs once you're back online.
Lucia's week on it: she records the market-hall interview with the vendor's OK, reads the summary on the bus, and gets an English translation of her Spanish interview on Pro. Before her next client visit, she asks the recording from the last one what the owner said about wholesale prices. Got a file from another recorder? Our free audio to text tool takes an upload.
Run Lucia's test. Download ParrotNotes free, record your next in-person conversation with everyone's OK, and read the summary before you've left the building.
The verdict on Trint vs Otter
Trint and Otter aren't really rivals. Trint is a newsroom platform: shared editing, live transcripts a colleague can follow, 50+ transcription languages, translation into 70+ and captions, at $79 to $100 a month for one seat. Otter is a meeting assistant: a notetaker that joins your calendar's calls, chat across meetings and CRM integrations, in six languages.
So choose by the job. If you're Priya, verifying quotes with a team every day, start the Trint trial with your three hardest files. If you're Tom, living in video calls, Otter's Basic plan is the place to start.
And if you're Lucia, with conversations that happen face to face and in more than one language, get ParrotNotes free and try it on your next one.
