Speech recognition is done by your browser's own service (Chrome and Edge use Google's or Microsoft's servers, Safari uses Apple's); ParrotNotes never receives the audio. The text goes to ParrotNotes' server only when you press Translate, is not stored there, and only a count of characters is kept for your monthly allowance.

    How it works

From a Spanish sentence to the English you can act on, in three steps.

    1. 1

      Speak or paste

Pick the direction and your Spanish (Spain, Mexico or United States), press the microphone and talk, or paste up to 2,000 characters into the box. You can edit the text before you translate it.

    2. 2

      Sign in and translate

Sign in with Google, Apple or an email code (it creates a free ParrotNotes account) and press Translate. The translation takes a few seconds.

    3. 3

      Read, copy or listen

Read the English, check the note on any idiom, copy the text, or press Read aloud to hear it in your browser's English voice. Switch the direction to answer in Spanish.

    What you get

The meaning of what was said, not a paraphrase.

    • A faithful translation

The whole passage, nothing added and nothing dropped, with names, numbers, dates, prices and units kept exactly as you said them.

    • Notes on idioms

When a saying does not translate word for word, the translation carries the meaning and a one-line note gives the original phrase, what it means literally and how it was rendered.

    • Both directions

Spanish to English by default; switch to English to Spanish to answer a message or to prepare what you are about to say.

    • Three kinds of Spanish

Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (United States) for the microphone, chosen before you start and switchable at any time.

    • Read aloud

When your browser has a voice for the target language, a Read aloud button speaks the translation, so you can play the Spanish to the person in front of you.

    • Copy

One button copies the translation and the notes as plain text for a message, an email or your own notes.

Which Spanish, and how good is the result

Two things decide the result: what the browser heard, and how the passage was translated.

    • Pick the closest Spanish

Mexico covers most of Latin America well; Spain is a different accent and vocabulary; United States is for Spanish spoken alongside English. Try one sentence in each if you are unsure.

    • Say names and numbers slowly

People's names, product names and figures are the words most often misheard. Check them in the box before you translate, and check them again in the result.

    • Short passages, one idea each

A voicemail or a couple of sentences at a time translates more reliably than a long speech, and the notes stay useful.

    • The register is kept

Formal Spanish (usted) comes out as formal English and the other way round; a casual message stays casual.

    • It is a translation, not a legal or medical record

Use it to understand and to be understood on the spot. For a contract, a consent form or anything a doctor or a lawyer will rely on, use a professional translator.

Only need the Spanish as text, with no translation? The free Spanish Dictation Tool does that, and the Dictation Tool covers other languages.

    When a voice translator helps

The conversations where a few translated sentences change the day.

    • A customer or a crew who speak Spanish

A home services or construction owner confirming a start time, a price or a change with a Spanish-speaking customer or crew lead, on the doorstep or on site.

    • A voicemail or a WhatsApp message

Paste the message, read the English, then switch the direction and dictate your answer in English to send it in Spanish.

    • A supplier or a distributor abroad

Food, drink, packaging and agricultural suppliers in Mexico, Spain or the rest of Latin America: translate the order detail before it goes wrong.

    • A bilingual team

A nurse manager or a charge nurse with Spanish-speaking staff: the shift note, the safety reminder or the huddle point in both languages. Never details about the people in your care.

    • A quote for a story

A journalist checking what a Spanish-speaking source said before using it; the idiom note shows where a literal rendering would mislead.

Audio translation: a passage here, a conversation in the app

This page translates text you say or paste. A recorded conversation is a different job.

    • This page: what you say or paste

Up to 2,000 characters at a time, translated on the spot: a sentence at the counter, a message, a short voicemail you typed out.

    • The ParrotNotes app: the whole recorded conversation

On the Pro plan ParrotNotes transcribes in 99+ languages and gives you the transcript in the language you choose, so a site visit held in Spanish becomes English notes with a summary and action items. Audio translation services for subtitles and dubbing are a different product and not what this page does.

One passage here. The whole conversation in the app.

You translated one passage. ParrotNotes on Pro records the conversation on your phone and gives you the transcript in the language you choose, with the summary and the action items. Free to start, with 100 minutes of recording a month.
