Opus to MP3 Converter
Drop a saved voice message or any .opus or .ogg file and download an MP3 that plays in almost any player, car stereo or editor. Your browser does the conversion, so nothing is uploaded.
Drop your Opus file here or click to browse
OPUS or OGG, up to 100 MB and 30 minutes. A file with an odd name is fine if it holds Ogg audio.
The file stays on this device. Only convert someone else's voice message if you have their permission to keep it.
Find the saved voice message first
Chat apps keep voice messages inside the chat. These are the usual ways to get one out as a file. WhatsApp and Telegram do not publish steps for this that we could read, so they come from how-to guides, and menu names and folders change between versions.
WhatsApp on Android
Open your Files app and search for the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder, then copy the file to Downloads. Some Android versions hide the folder from some file apps. If yours does, export the chat instead: More options > More > Export chat > Include media.
WhatsApp on iPhone
Press and hold the voice message, tap Forward, tap the share button instead of picking a chat, and choose Save to Files. Then pick the file from Files on this page, in a browser that can read it (see the table below).
WhatsApp Web and desktop
Move the pointer over the voice message, click the small arrow that appears, and choose Download. The file lands in your downloads and usually ends in .ogg or .opus.
Telegram Desktop
Right-click the voice message and choose Save As (the label can differ by version), then pick a folder. It saves as .ogg, which is Opus audio, and this page takes it as it is.
How to convert Opus to MP3
One file at a time, on your device.
- 1
Drop the file
Drag it onto the converter or tap to pick it. The page checks the name, the type and the first bytes of the file, because saved voice messages sometimes arrive with an odd name or none. A file over 30 minutes stops here.
- 2
Keep 64 kbps
That suits one voice talking. A higher number gives a bigger file, and it cannot add back detail the Opus file no longer has. Pick 128 if the message has music in it.
- 3
Save the MP3
Your browser unpacks the Opus audio and an MP3 encoder inside the page writes the new file. Play it to check, then save it under the same name with .mp3 at the end.
Why the MP3 can be bigger than the Opus file
Opus and MP3 are both lossy: each throws away sound to save space. Going from one to the other loses a little more and never gets anything back, so keep the original. Opus was built to sound good at low bitrates, so the MP3 is often the larger file.
| Length | 48 kbps | 64 kbps | 96 kbps | 128 kbps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 minute | 352 KB | 469 KB | 703 KB | 938 KB |
| 5 minutes | 1.7 MB | 2.3 MB | 3.4 MB | 4.6 MB |
| 30 minutes | 10.3 MB | 13.7 MB | 20.6 MB | 27.5 MB |
Which browsers can do this
The conversion uses your browser's own decoder through a function called decodeAudioData. The published tables cover playing Opus in the audio element, which is a close guide but not the same thing, and Apple's release notes do not say whether Safari decodes Ogg Opus through this function.
| Browser | Opus in Ogg (.opus, .ogg) |
|---|---|
| Chrome, Edge (computer and Android) | Yes |
| Firefox | Yes |
| Safari 18.4 or later (iOS 18.4, macOS Sequoia 15.4) | Plays it; should convert, but not confirmed |
| Older Safari, and any browser on an older iPhone or iPad | No |
Other people's voice messages
Ask before you keep or pass one on
A voice message was sent to you for a chat. Have the sender's permission before you keep a copy outside the chat, share it or publish it. The rules on this differ between countries.
View once means once
WhatsApp voice messages sent as view once cannot be forwarded or saved, and this page offers no way around that.
Nothing leaves this page for conversion
The file is not uploaded for the conversion. The page records ordinary analytics events, such as a finished conversion, never the file or its name.
More on voice notes: how to transcribe voice notes, how to transcribe a voice memo.
Your own voice notes, as text
An MP3 is still something you have to listen to. When the recording is your own, the ParrotNotes app records it, transcribes it and summarizes it, so you can read what was said.
