Save the voice note as a file first

Messaging apps keep voice notes inside the chat. Get a copy out as a file, then drop it here. Menu names change between app versions, so look for the nearest match.

  • On iPhone

    Press and hold the voice note, then look for Share, or Forward followed by the share button, and choose Save to Files. Open this page in a browser and pick the file from Files.

  • On Android

    Press and hold the voice note and use Share to send it to Files, Drive or your email. Some apps also keep received audio in a folder on the phone that a file manager can open.

  • On a computer

    In the desktop or web app, open the voice note's menu (often a right-click) and choose Download or Save As. The file usually ends in .ogg, .opus or .oga.

  • Many notes at once

    Exporting the whole chat with media attached gives you every voice note in it as separate files. Convert the ones you need one at a time.

    Voice notes are recorded small, so a higher bitrate makes a bigger file without making the voice clearer. Pick 128 kbps only if the note has music in it.

    The browser decodes the Opus audio and writes an MP3 on your device. Play it in the preview, then download it with the same name and an .mp3 ending.

OGG, Opus and OGA: what the names mean

OGG is a container: the wrapper around the audio. Opus and Vorbis are codecs: the way the sound itself is compressed. Voice notes from WhatsApp and Telegram are usually Opus audio in an OGG container, which is why the same kind of file can arrive as .ogg, .opus or .oga.

The standard for Opus in Ogg recommends the .opus extension and the audio/ogg media type; .oga is the general extension for Ogg audio. To this converter they are the same thing: it reads the Opus or Vorbis audio inside and writes a plain MP3.

Why some players will not play OGG

  • Car stereos and older players

    Many car stereos and older media players read MP3, AAC and WAV but not OGG. An MP3 copy is the safe choice for all of them.

  • Editors and upload forms

    Some audio editors, slide tools and web forms only accept MP3, M4A or WAV and reject .ogg or .opus without explaining why.

  • Older iPhones and Macs

    Safari gained OGG support in Safari 18.4 (iOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4). On earlier versions an .ogg voice note will not play in Safari or in any iPhone browser.
