How to convert hours to minutes
Multiply the hours by 60. 2.75 hours × 60 = 165 minutes, and 1.5 hours × 60 = 90 minutes. For seconds, multiply the minutes by 60 again: 165 minutes is 9,900 seconds.
If the time is written as hours and minutes, multiply only the hours and add the minutes: 2:45 is 2 × 60 + 45 = 165 minutes. That is why 2:45 and 2.45 are not the same: 2.45 hours is 147 minutes.
Time calculator: minutes to hours
Divide the minutes by 60. 165 minutes ÷ 60 = 2.75 hours. The whole number is the hours; the remainder in minutes is what is left over: 165 − 2 × 60 = 45, so 2 hours 45 minutes.
Some quick ones: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, 90 minutes is 1.5 and 480 minutes is 8 hours.
Decimal hours and h:mm on a time sheet
Payroll and billing software usually wants decimal hours, rounded to hundredths: a shift of 7 hours 48 minutes is 7 + 48 ÷ 60 = 7.80 hours. The other way round, 7.8 hours is 7 hours and 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes, so 7:48.
Use the Decimal hours ↔ h:mm mode for that, and the chart below for the minutes part. If you need a whole week of shifts added up with pay, use the time card calculator; for the time between two clock times, use the time duration calculator.

Rounding to the quarter hour
Some employers record start and stop times to the nearest 5 minutes, tenth of an hour or quarter hour. The US Department of Labor's rule on this, 29 CFR 785.48(b), accepts the practice only if it averages out so that employees are paid for all the time they actually work over time.
Rounding to the nearest quarter hour means 7 minutes past rounds down and 8 minutes past rounds up: 7:07 counts as 7:00 and 7:08 as 7:15. The Decimal hours ↔ h:mm mode shows the nearest quarter hour for any amount you type. Your employer's policy and the law decide how your own time is rounded.

The minutes are often call time
Much of the time people convert for a log or an invoice is time on calls and in meetings. ParrotNotes records the call on your phone and gives you a summary and the action items, so the notes are done when the call ends. Free for 100 minutes of recording a month.
