How to convert military time in your head

  • Afternoon and evening: add 12

    From 1:00 PM on, add 12 to the hour and drop the colon: 3:15 PM is 1515, 7:00 PM is 1900, 11:30 PM is 2330.

  • Reading it back: subtract 12

    From 1300 on, subtract 12 and add PM: 1300 is 1:00 PM, 1945 is 7:45 PM. Anything from 0100 to 1159 is the same number in the morning, with AM.

  • The two 12 o'clocks

    Noon is 1200. The hour after midnight is 00, so 12:00 AM is 0000 and 12:30 AM is 0030. These two are where most mistakes happen.

  • Always four digits

    Military time is written with four digits and no colon: 7:05 AM is 0705, not 705. The minutes are the same in both systems.

Midnight and noon

0000 is midnight at the start of a day and 2400 is midnight at the end of one: the same moment, written from either side. Digital clocks and phones use 0000, and some style guides and workplaces avoid both on schedules by writing 2359 or 0001. Noon is 1200, never 0000 or 2400.

How to say military time

On the hour, say "hundred hours": 0600 is zero six hundred hours, 2000 is twenty hundred hours (not two thousand). Otherwise say the hour and the minutes: 1430 is fourteen thirty hours, 0543 is zero five forty-three hours. Leading zeros are spoken, which is how you tell 0700 from 1700 on a noisy line.

Military time zones are a separate thing: each zone has a letter, and "Zulu" (Z) is UTC. This tool converts the clock format only, not time zones.
