Amount in Words Converter

Type an amount and get it in words two ways at once: the check line ("One thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and 56/100") and fully spelled out for an invoice, quote or contract. Pick dollars, euros or no currency, switch to all caps if you like, and copy it in one click. Works up to 999 trillion.

How to write an amount in words on a check

A check carries the amount twice: in figures in the box, and in words on the line below the payee. The words are the legal amount, so take care that they match the figures. Chase's guide to writing a check gives both ways of writing the cents: $105.50 is "one hundred five dollars and 50/100" or "one hundred five dollars and fifty cents".

The check style here writes the dollars in words and the cents as a fraction of 100, which leaves less room to change the amount afterwards. A whole amount gets "and 00/100", so $105 reads "One hundred five dollars and 00/100"; Chase also shows "one hundred five dollars only", which is just as clear. Cents only? $0.45 is "Zero dollars and 45/100".

The rules the converter follows

US English, as on a check: no "and" inside the hundreds ("one hundred five", not "one hundred and five"), a hyphen in twenty-one to ninety-nine, and "and" only before the cents. Large amounts use thousand, million, billion and trillion, and empty groups are skipped: $1,000,001 is "one million one dollars".

You can type the amount the way you write it: with or without the $ sign, with commas or spaces between thousands, and with a point before the cents. A comma or point followed by three digits groups thousands (1,234 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four); followed by one or two digits it marks the cents (12,5 is twelve dollars and fifty cents). The line under the box shows how the amount was read, so a slip shows before you copy. Negative amounts are refused, and more than two decimals too.

Amounts in words on invoices and quotes

Some customers ask for the total in words on an invoice, a quote or a contract, next to the figure, so nobody can misread a decimal point. Use the In words result for that: "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents". Choose No currency for a quantity, a measurement or a cheque in another currency, or Euros for an invoice in euros.

Copy the line, paste it under the total, and read it once against the figure. If the amount changes, change it here and copy it again rather than editing the words by hand.

Writing the invoice or quote itself? Use the Contractor Invoice Template, the Estimate Template or the Quotation Generator, and the Receipt Template once it is paid.
