How to work out when your shift ends
- 1
Enter your start time
Type it as you would say it: 7:00 AM, 7am, 19:00 or 1900. Choose 8, 10 or 12 hours, or type your own length.
- 2
Add your breaks
Put your unpaid lunch in minutes, and say whether the 8 hours are paid hours (lunch added on top) or the time you are there (lunch inside).
- 3
Read the end time and pay
The page adds the time on, rolls past midnight into the next day if it needs to, and multiplies the paid hours by your rate.

Is lunch part of the 8 hours?
It depends on how your employer counts the shift, and both ways are common. If you are paid for 8 hours and take a 30 minute unpaid lunch, you are at work for 8 hours 30 minutes: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. If the shift is 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and the lunch comes out of it, you are paid for 7 hours 30 minutes. The switch under Shift length picks one or the other.
Paid breaks are different. A paid 15 minute break is part of the time you are paid for, so it does not push the end time back. Enter it if you want to see how much of the shift you spend working; the end time and pay stay the same.
Meal and rest break rules in the US
Federal law does not require lunch or coffee breaks. When an employer does give short breaks, usually 5 to 20 minutes, the Department of Labor counts them as hours worked, so they are paid and count toward overtime. A real meal period, typically 30 minutes or more when you are fully off duty, is not work time and does not have to be paid.
Some states do require a meal period. The Department of Labor's state table lists more than twenty states and territories with meal break rules for adults. California's basic rule, for example, is a 30 minute meal period when you work more than 5 hours in a day and a second one past 10 hours, with exceptions. Check your state's rule and your employer's policy; this page is a calculator, not legal advice.
Night shifts, 10s and 12s
An end time after midnight is shown with "next day". A 12 hour night shift from 7:00 PM with a 30 minute unpaid break added on ends at 7:30 AM; if the break sits inside the 12 hours, it ends at 7:00 AM and pays 11 hours 30 minutes.
Federal overtime is counted by the workweek, after 40 hours, not by the length of one shift. Four 10 hour days come to 40 hours with no federal overtime, and three 12s come to 36. Some states also have daily overtime rules; the Overtime Calculator has the details.
Your shift is on the clock. The briefing does not have to live in your head.
Staff meetings, trainings and huddles at the start of a shift go by fast. ParrotNotes records them, transcribes them and gives you a short summary to read when you have a minute.
