PLAUD vs Pocket: Which AI Recorder Fits Your Day

PLAUD vs Pocket comes down to one trade. Pocket is the cheaper device with unlimited free transcription, but its free summaries only last 30 days. PLAUD Note costs more up front and caps free transcription at 300 minutes a month, but it keeps everything and lasts far longer on a charge.

If you'd rather not buy a device at all, the phone in your hand can do the meeting part. More on that at the end.

Dana sells commercial flooring in Phoenix. (Dana is a composite, not a real person.)

In October she had both recorders open in two browser tabs for a week. Pocket was $30 cheaper. PLAUD had more reviews.

Neither page told her what she'd actually pay by month six, once the free trial ended and the summaries started piling up.

That's what this comparison works out. Every PLAUD fact comes from plaud.ai and every Pocket fact from heypocket.com, both opened on November 7, 2026. It isn't a hands-on test. You'll get the specs side by side, what "free" means on each, a two-year cost table, and a checklist to match one to your week.

One disclosure: ParrotNotes publishes this blog, and we make a phone app, not a recorder. If you want to see what your phone already captures before spending $129 or more, try ParrotNotes free at your next meeting.

PLAUD vs Pocket: the short answer

Pick Pocket if you want the lowest price to start, record a lot, and are fine either paying for Pro or exporting notes before they expire.

Pick PLAUD Note if you want a recorder that runs for days of meetings between charges, keeps every summary on the free plan, and has the bigger template library.

Pick neither if most of your recordings are in-person meetings with your phone already on the table.

Which "Pocket" and which PLAUD

"Pocket" is a common word, so first, which device this is. People searching PLAUD vs Pocket (or Pocket vs PLAUD) mean Pocket by Open Vision Engineering, sold at heypocket.com. The Pocket AI recorder is a thin device that snaps onto the back of a phone with MagSafe. Phones without MagSafe, most Android phones included, use an adhesive mount that comes in the box.

PLAUD makes four recorders. The one most people compare with Pocket is the PLAUD Note, because both are card-shaped and ride on the back of a phone.

PLAUD devicePriceHow you carry itPhone calls
Note$159Magnetic case on the phone, or looseYes
Note Pro$189Magnetic case on the phone, or looseYes
NotePin$159Pin, clip, lanyard or wristbandNo, in-person only
NotePin S$179Pin, clip, lanyard or wristbandNo, in-person only

If you want something you wear rather than something on your phone, our PLAUD NotePin review and our guide to wearable AI voice recorders cover them. This post sticks to the phone-mounted recorders.

Hardware: PLAUD Note vs Pocket side by side

On paper the two devices look alike. Both are card-sized, both have 64 GB of storage, and both record calls from the back of the phone. The differences show up in three places.

Battery. PLAUD lists up to 30 hours of continuous recording and 60 days of standby for the Note. Pocket lists 4 days of active use and a 1.5-hour charge. Those aren't measured the same way, so don't compare the numbers directly. In practice, PLAUD's figure means you can forget the charger for a week of meetings. With Pocket, plan on charging it every few days.

Range. Pocket claims pickup up to 49 feet from two studio mics and one contact mic. The PLAUD Note lists 9.8 feet from two MEMS mics and a vibration sensor; the Note Pro reaches 16.4 feet with four mics. Range claims are measured in the vendor's own conditions. For a conference room, though, Pocket and the Note Pro have more headroom than the Note.

Size. The PLAUD Note is 0.12 inches thick and weighs 1.06 oz. Pocket is 0.2 inches thick and weighs 52 g (1.8 oz). Both add bulk to a phone; Pocket adds a little more.

A note on Pocket's price: its own pages don't agree. The cart showed $129.00 against a $199.00 compare-at price on November 7, 2026. A banner on the same page said "$99 for your Pocket," and Pocket's comparison page still says $139. Check the total at checkout.

Plans: what "free" really means on each

This is where the PLAUD vs Pocket choice is actually made. Both sell the device with a free plan. The free plans are generous in opposite directions.

PLAUD: limited minutes, everything kept

Every PLAUD device includes the Starter plan: 300 transcription minutes a month at no cost. Past that, recording keeps working, but transcription pauses until the month resets or you buy more.

PLAUD planMonthlyBilled yearlyMinutes a month
Starter$0$0300
Pro$17.99$8.33 a month ($99.96 a year)1,200
Unlimited$29.99$20.00 a monthUp to 24 hours a day
Team$28 per user (to Nov 30, 2026, then $35)$20 per user first year, then $25Up to 24 hours a day

Unused minutes don't roll over. One-time top-ups of 600, 3,000 or 6,000 minutes are sold separately. PLAUD lists 10,000+ summary templates on every plan.

Pocket: unlimited minutes, summaries expire

Pocket's Free plan gives unlimited transcription at standard accuracy, unlimited summaries saved for 30 days, and Ask Pocket (its chat with your recordings) at 3 chats a day of up to 3 messages each. You can export text and download the audio.

Pocket planMonthlyBilled yearlyWhat it adds
Free$0$0Unlimited standard transcription, summaries kept 30 days
Pro$29.99$19.99 a month ($239.88 a year)Summaries kept forever, highest-accuracy transcription, speaker names, 80+ templates, unlimited Ask Pocket, Notion, Google Drive and OneDrive sync, PDF and DOCX export
BusinessCustomCustomTeam features

A new Pocket gets the first 30 days of the subscription free, starting after delivery.

So the honest summary is this. PLAUD limits how much you transcribe for free. Pocket limits how long your notes last and how good the transcript is.

If you only need a transcript you'll copy into your CRM the same day, Pocket's free plan goes further. If you want a searchable archive without paying monthly, PLAUD's goes further.

PLAUD vs Pocket over two years: the cost table

Device prices get the attention, but the plan is most of the bill. Here's what two years costs at three levels of use, at the prices listed on November 7, 2026, with yearly billing. It ignores taxes, sales and Pocket's free first month.

Your monthPLAUD NotePocketParrotNotes (phone app)
Light: about 100 minutes, a few meetings$159 (Starter covers it)$129 (Free covers it)$0 (Free: 100 minutes)
Medium: about 1,000 minutes, summaries kept$358.92 (Note + Pro)$608.76 (Pocket + Pro)$359.76 (Pro)
Heavy: about 2,000 minutes, summaries kept$639 (Note + Unlimited)$608.76 (Pocket + Pro)$359.76 (Pro, 3,000-minute cap)

How the numbers add up:

  • PLAUD Pro yearly is $99.96 a year, so two years plus the $159 Note is $358.92. Unlimited at $20 a month is $480 over two years, plus $159.
  • Pocket Pro yearly is $239.88 a year, so two years plus the $129 device is $608.76. On Pocket's free plan the medium and heavy rows would stay at $129, if you accept standard accuracy and summaries that expire after 30 days.
  • ParrotNotes Pro yearly is $14.99 a month, $179.88 a year. There's no device. Pro covers up to 3,000 minutes a month.

Two things stand out. At medium use, PLAUD costs about $250 less than Pocket over two years once you want your notes kept. At heavy use the two devices land close together, because Pocket Pro has no minute line while PLAUD needs its Unlimited plan past 1,200 minutes.

If you pay monthly instead, the gap widens. Pocket Pro at $29.99 a month is $719.76 over two years before the device. PLAUD Pro at $17.99 is $431.76.

Recording phone calls on PLAUD and Pocket

Both devices record calls the same basic way. They sit on the back of the phone and pick up the call through vibration, so you don't need speakerphone. PLAUD's Note and Note Pro have a call mode that uses a vibration sensor; Pocket uses its contact mic. The PLAUD NotePins can't do this.

Before you record a call, know the law where you and the other person are. Some US states only need one person on the call to agree; others need everyone. Our guide to one-party consent states lists them. The simplest habit works everywhere: say you're recording at the start of the call.

You may not need a device for calls at all. Recent iPhones and many Android phones can record calls in the built-in phone app, with an announcement to the other side. See how to record phone calls on iPhone and how to record a phone call on Android before you buy hardware for this one job.

Which fits your day: an eight-question check

Answer yes or no to each.

  1. Do you record more than 300 minutes a month (about 10 half-hour meetings)?
  2. Do you need your summaries searchable months from now?
  3. Do you record phone calls on a phone that can't record them itself?
  4. Do you often record in a large room, with people more than 10 feet away?
  5. Will you forget to charge a gadget every few days?
  6. Is your budget for year one under $200 all in?
  7. Is your phone already on the table at most of your meetings?
  8. Do your meetings switch between languages, or need a translated transcript?

How to read it:

  • Yes to 1 and 6, no to 2: Pocket on its free plan is hard to beat for raw minutes.
  • Yes to 2 and 5: PLAUD Note. It keeps notes on the free plan and runs longest on a charge.
  • Yes to 3 and 4: either device; for big rooms, Pocket or the PLAUD Note Pro.
  • Yes to 7 or 8: you may not need a device. Read the next section first.

Marcus runs a two-person HVAC sales team outside Columbus. (Marcus is a composite, not a real person.) He answered yes to 1, 2 and 7. His recordings are site walks and kitchen-table quotes, about 1,200 minutes a month, and the phone is always in his hand.

A device would have been one more thing to charge in the truck. He kept recording on the phone.

The third option: the phone you already carry

Both PLAUD and Pocket are, in the end, a microphone that sends audio to a phone app. If the conversation is in the room and your phone is already there, an app can do the recording itself.

That's what ParrotNotes does. Tap record on your iPhone or Android phone, put it down and keep talking. Recording continues with the screen locked, and it works offline; transcription and the AI run once you're back on a connection. When you stop, you get a transcript, an AI summary and action items.

Here's what each plan includes, from our pricing page:

  • Free, $0: 100 minutes of recording a month (up to 30 minutes per recording), an AI summary on every recording, and 5 AI-powered recordings a month with action items and sales frameworks.
  • Pro, $19.99 a month or $14.99 a month billed yearly: 3,000 minutes a month, recordings up to 3 hours, every AI feature on every recording, speaker identification, and transcription in 99+ languages with translation.

Be clear on the limits too. ParrotNotes isn't a phone-call recorder, and Free's 100 minutes are fewer than either device's free plan. Where it wins is the medium and heavy rows of the cost table, the languages, and having nothing extra to carry. Our ParrotNotes vs PLAUD comparison goes deeper on that trade, and PLAUD vs Otter covers the device-or-app question with Otter in the mix.

Lena, a recruiter in Denver, ran her first week of candidate interviews on the free plan before deciding. (Lena is a composite, not a real person.) Nine of her ten interviews were in person with her phone on the desk; the tenth was a call she logged by hand. She skipped the device. If your week looks like hers, download ParrotNotes and record your next meeting before you spend $129 or more.

The bottom line on PLAUD vs Pocket

  • Pocket is the cheaper way in and has unlimited free transcription, but free summaries last 30 days and Pro is $29.99 a month.
  • PLAUD Note costs $30 more but keeps your notes on the free plan, runs longer on a charge, and its Pro plan is far cheaper, with a 1,200-minute cap.
  • For calls, both work from the back of the phone; check whether your phone already records calls first, and always get consent.
  • For in-person meetings with your phone on the table, an app may be all you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, PLAUD or Pocket?

Neither wins outright. Pocket is cheaper ($129 in the cart on November 7, 2026) and transcribes unlimited minutes for free, but free summaries are kept for 30 days. PLAUD Note costs $159, gives 300 free minutes a month, keeps your notes, and its Pro plan costs less than Pocket Pro.

Does Pocket need a subscription?

No. Pocket's free plan includes unlimited standard-accuracy transcription and summaries kept for 30 days. Pro, at $29.99 a month or $19.99 a month billed yearly, keeps summaries forever and adds higher-accuracy transcription, speaker names and unlimited Ask Pocket chats.

How many free minutes does PLAUD give?

Every PLAUD device includes the Starter plan with 300 transcription minutes a month. Pro gives 1,200 minutes for $17.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed yearly. Unused minutes don't roll over.

Can PLAUD and Pocket record phone calls?

Yes. The PLAUD Note and Note Pro have a call mode, and Pocket uses a contact mic; both sit on the back of the phone. The PLAUD NotePin and NotePin S record in person only. Check your state's consent rules and tell the other person before recording.

Does Pocket work with Android phones?

Pocket mounts with MagSafe. For phones without MagSafe, which includes most Android phones, Pocket includes an adhesive mount in the order.

Do I need a recorder at all?

Not if most of your conversations are in person with your phone nearby. A phone app like ParrotNotes records, transcribes and summarizes on the phone you already carry. ParrotNotes Free is $0 with 100 minutes a month; Pro gives 3,000 minutes a month.
