Voice Changer

Upload a recording or record your voice, pick one of eight voices, from robot and deep to chipmunk, telephone and echo, set how strong it is and compare it with the original before you download it as MP3 or WAV. The effects run in your browser; your recording is not uploaded.

How to change your voice

Three steps, in your browser.

  1. 1

    Upload or record

Drop an MP3, M4A, WAV or other recording up to 100 MB and 30 minutes, or record up to 10 minutes with your microphone.

  2. 2

    Pick a voice

Choose robot, deep, chipmunk, telephone, echo, walkie-talkie, alien or cave and move the intensity slider. The first 30 seconds play as original and changed, so you can switch between them while you choose.

  3. 3

    Download

Press Change the voice. The whole recording is changed in your browser and saved as an MP3 at the bitrate you pick or as a 16-bit WAV.

Only want it higher or lower? The Audio Pitch Changer shifts the pitch by exact semitones; this page is for voice effects.

The eight voices

  • Robot voice changer

Ring modulation at 30 to 80 Hz with a touch of bitcrush: the voice turns metallic and buzzy, the classic robot sound.

  • Deep voice changer

The pitch drops 4 to 6 semitones and a low shelf adds a little bass, for a bigger, darker voice of the same length.

  • Chipmunk voice changer

The pitch rises 6 to 8 semitones without speeding the recording up, so it sounds high and squeaky but lasts as long.

  • Telephone, walkie-talkie, echo, alien and cave

A narrow phone band, a crunchy two-way radio, fading repeats, a wobbly alien and a long cave reverb. One intensity slider sets each from subtle to strong.

How the effects work

These are classic audio effects, not artificial intelligence. Robot and alien use ring modulation: the voice is multiplied by a steady tone, so each frequency in it comes out as the sum and the difference of the two, which sounds metallic and no longer quite human.

Deep and chipmunk shift the pitch while keeping the length, the same way the Audio Pitch Changer does. Telephone keeps roughly the 300 to 3,400 Hz band a phone line carries and adds a little distortion; walkie-talkie narrows it further and adds crunch and hiss.

Echo feeds a delay back into itself so the repeats fade; cave runs the voice through a long reverb made from a decaying burst of noise. Every voice ends at a peak of -1 dB, so the result does not clip.

Ideas for a changed voice

  • A fun clip for a video or post

Record a line, turn it into a robot or a chipmunk and drop the MP3 into your video editor or a social post.

  • A character voice

Give a game character, a podcast intro or a story narrator a voice of its own: deep for a villain, alien for a creature, telephone for a call in a scene.

  • Your own voice, less recognisable

In a casual clip, robot, deep or alien at high intensity makes your voice harder to place. It is an effect, not a privacy tool: words and speaking style stay the same.

  • More sound effects

Play a clip backwards with Reverse Audio, or move it around your head with the 8D Audio Converter.

When the recording is a call or a meeting

Fun clips aside, most of what we record is a call, a meeting or a quick note. ParrotNotes records it on your phone and gives you the transcript and a summary, free for 100 minutes of recording a month.
