Drywall Calculator: How Many Sheets Do I Need?
Estimate how many drywall sheets a room needs from its walls and ceiling, with joint compound, tape, screws and the cost. Measure the room or list the walls, take off the doors and windows, pick the sheet size and use the result for the order or the quote.
Your numbers
Room
Adds length × width.
Doors and windows
A 36 × 80 in door is 20 sq ft. Use 0 doors to hang over them.
A 3 × 5 ft window is 15 sq ft.
Sheets
Typical 10 % for cuts and breakage. Added to the sheets only.
Compound, tape and screws
Rates per 1,000 sq ft of board, from USG's estimating table. Edit them to your product.

An estimate for quoting and buying. Fire-rated, moisture-resistant and ceiling board, fastener spacing and finish level follow the manufacturer's instructions and your local code.
Compound, tape and screws use USG's figures without waste; corner bead, adhesive and primer are not included.

How many sheets of drywall do I need?
Add up the surface you are covering: for a rectangular room the walls are 2 × (length + width) × height, and the ceiling is length × width. Take off the doors and the large windows, add a margin for cuts and breakage, then divide by the area of one sheet: 32 sq ft for a 4 × 8, 40 for a 4 × 10, 48 for a 4 × 12. Round up.
Worked example: a 12 × 14 ft room with 8 ft walls has 416 sq ft of wall and a 168 sq ft ceiling, 584 sq ft in all. One door (20 sq ft) and two windows (15 sq ft each) leave 534 sq ft. With 10 % waste that is 587.4 sq ft: 18.4 sheets of 4 × 8, so buy 19, or 13 sheets of 4 × 12.
Joint compound, tape and screws per 1,000 sq ft
USG's estimating table in its SHEETROCK installation and finish guide gives, for every 1,000 sq ft of board: 2.7 lb of Type W screws (12 in apart on ceilings, 16 in on walls), 370 ft of joint tape, and 138 lb of all purpose ready-mixed compound or 9.4 gallons of the lightweight kind. USG notes that compound coverage varies widely with the surface, the tools and the finisher.
The calculator starts with those figures and works out whole pails (4.5 gallons), rolls (250 ft) and boxes. Change any rate or package size to match what you buy. The maker's figures carry no waste, so the waste percent is added to the sheets only.
Which sheet size: 4 × 8, 4 × 10 or 4 × 12?
Longer sheets mean fewer butt joints to tape, and a 12 ft sheet hung horizontally covers a 12 ft wall in one run. They are heavier and harder to get up a staircase, so 4 × 8 is the usual choice for small rooms, repairs and anything carried by hand. USG makes its 1/2 in UltraLight panel in 48 and 54 in widths and lengths from 6 to 16 ft.
Run the room with two sizes and compare: the sheet count, the joints and what the yard charges per sheet usually decide it.
Tips for the walk-through
Measure each wall and the ceiling height, and note anything that changes the board: moisture-resistant board for a bathroom, fire-rated board where the code calls for it, high ceilings that need a lift, outside corners that need bead. Building codes vary by place, and the local code and the manufacturer's instructions win over any calculator.
Then write down what the customer told you: the finish they expect, texture or smooth, which rooms first, what has to be protected and when it must be ready. Those notes decide the quote as much as the sheet count does.

The sheet count is only part of the quote
The sheets go on the quote. What the customer said on the walk-through about the finish level, texture, ceiling height, damaged areas and when the room has to be ready goes in ParrotNotes: record the visit and get the summary and next steps.
