Audio Equalizer

Change the bass, mids and treble of a song or recording with 10 bands and six presets, compare with the original while it plays, and download an MP3 or WAV. It equalizes a file: it does not change the sound of your whole computer.

Drop your song or recording here or click to browse

MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, WEBM or MP4, up to 100 MB and 30 minutes.

This equalizes one file. It does not change the sound of your computer, your browser or other apps. The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

How to equalize an audio file online

Three steps, in your browser.

  1. 1

    Drop the file

A song, a podcast or a voice recording: MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC and other common formats up to 100 MB and 30 minutes.

  2. 2

    Pick a preset and listen

Start with a preset or move the bands yourself. Press play and switch between Original and Equalized while it plays; every slider move is heard at once, and both sides play at the same loudness.

  3. 3

    Apply and download

The whole file goes through the same filters, is lowered as a whole if it would clip, and is saved as an MP3 at the bitrate you choose or as a 16-bit WAV. The page tells you the peak and how much it lowered.

Only want more low end? The Bass Booster does that with one slider. Only want it louder? Use the Volume Booster.

What each band does

These ranges are rules of thumb: real sounds spread over several bands, and sources draw the lines a little differently.

BandRangeWhat is thereToo much sounds
31.5 HzSub-bassDeep bass you feel more than hearHeavy, and can distort
63 HzBassWeight of kick drums and bass guitarBoomy
125 HzBassHow full or thin the sound isBoomy
250 HzBass to low midsWarmth, low notes of most instrumentsMuddy
500 HzLow mids to midsBody of instruments and voicesMuffled
1 kHzMidsVoices, dialogue and most instrumentsForward and nasal
2 kHzMids to upper midsHow close a voice seemsHard and tiring
4 kHzUpper midsConsonants such as k, p and s, the attack of drumsHarsh
8 kHzUpper trebleClarity, cymbals, s soundsSharp s sounds and hiss
16 kHzUpper trebleAir and sparkleHiss, and tiring to the ear
A small speaker may not play the lowest bands at all, so changes there are heard mostly on headphones or larger speakers.

What the presets do

Each preset is a starting point. Its total effect at four frequencies, computed with the Web Audio filter formulas at 48 kHz:

Preset50 Hz300 Hz3 kHz12 kHz
Bass+6.4 dB+1.4 dB0.0 dB0.0 dB
Treble0.0 dB0.0 dB+2.6 dB+3.2 dB
Voice clarity-8.9 dB-2.1 dB+2.6 dB+0.4 dB
Reduce rumble-11.7 dB-0.8 dB0.0 dB0.0 dB
Reduce hiss0.0 dB0.0 dB-1.0 dB-4.4 dB
Flat sets every band to 0 dB, and Reset does the same. The curve in the tool shows the total for your own settings.

What it does and what it does not do

  • Ten bands an octave apart

Each band is a peaking filter about one octave wide, up or down by 12 dB. Neighbouring bands overlap, so the curve under the sliders shows what they add up to.

  • Clipping protection

Raising a band adds level. If the loudest moment would go past the top of the scale and distort, the page lowers the whole file just enough to keep the peak at -1 dB and tells you by how much. That is why a file can come out a little quieter.

  • A fair comparison

Louder tends to sound better at first, so the player plays both versions at the same loudness by default. Turn Match loudness off to hear the file as it will be saved.

  • Not a system equalizer

This page changes one file you give it. It cannot reach the sound of YouTube, Spotify, a game or your whole computer. For one browser tab you need a browser extension, and for everything your computer plays, a system audio app.

When each preset helps

  • Voice clarity

For a talk or a phone recording: it takes out the lowest bands, dips a little around 250 Hz and lifts 2 to 4 kHz, where consonants sit. It helps words stand out; it does not remove background voices.

  • Reduce rumble

For the low hum of traffic, air vents or a hand on the phone. It cuts the bands below about 125 Hz and leaves the rest. If there is music with real bass in the file, the bass goes too.

  • Reduce hiss

It lowers the top bands where hiss is loudest, and any real treble goes with it, so the file also gets duller. For steady noise under a voice, the Audio Enhancer is the better tool.

  • Use your own files

Edit recordings you made or have the right to change. Copy-protected audio will not open here.

Hiss or hum under a voice? Try the Audio Enhancer. Recording soon? See how to record an interview.

When the recording is a conversation

People often equalize a recording so they can make out the words. If it is a meeting, a call or an interview, what you may need is what was said: ParrotNotes records it, transcribes it and summarizes it.
